Help - DSC, BRAKE, SES light - Reset Computer???

Sorry for the long post, but more info is usually better. 2001, 330i, 165k, original owner.

About 2 weeks ago, my DSC and BRAKE indicators lit up yellow (no ABS light). Research from this sight and others suggested that this was the ABS / DSC system. I chose to try easy things first. I tried to reset the steering position sensor by slowly cycling the steering full left and right. I removed and cleaned each of the four wheel speed pulse sensors. No change. (I also verified that the DSC is not functioning with some spirited driving.)

Then a few days ago, I got the SES LIGHT. I went to Autozone to get the basic code readout. They could not get the unit to show a connection after it was plugged in to the ODBII port. I looked up the Peake manual online. It referenced that sometimes the DSC unit could “hang communications on the I bus”. The manual suggested a couple of easy things to try such as cycling the key and connecting the meter before turning the key. Neither worked.

The last option was to RESET THE COMPUTER. It suggested to disconnect the battery and run the emergency flashers until completely dead. I am a little afraid of try this one because I don’t know what else will happen. I do know that the radio theft deterrent will need to be reset.

    So here are my questions:
Has anyone done this reset? What else will happen?
What else can I check on the DSC system before going to the dealer?

Any info will be greatly appreciated. As always, I will post an update once resolved. Thanks.

had sa,e problem with 02 530i, it was the dsc module. Sent it to these people http://www.bba-reman.com/us/index.aspx, fixed it in 2 days for less than half the price of a new one. A friend of mine reset the computer, I cannot tell you how. Good luck

You will probably have to take it to the dealer, at least for a diagnosis. If the code results sound like something you want to repair by yourself, you don't have to let them do it. Our DCS/Brake light issue turned out to be a defective steering angle sensor (after I had taken an incorrect guess and replaced one of the wheel speed sensors).

Re: Help - DSC, BRAKE, SES light - Reset Computer???

Well, I have a suggestion that may or may not have anything to do with your problem. My DSC lights came on and stayed on. It would come on about 30 seconds after I started the engine. One day while sitting in traffic I stalled the motor and then restarted it. While the DSC light was off I pushed the button and forced the system off. The DSC light came on as expected. Aggravated, I then begin to cycle the button off and on and the DSC light would also go off and on as expected. After doing this for a few minutes while waiting for traffic I noticed that when I left the DSC on (light off) it stayed off. Drove home and the next time I started the engine the DSC light never came on. That's been two years. The DSC definitely works as it will come on if I use too much throttle when starting off in the rain. ABS also works.
So, if you want to try a free fix just start the car and cycle the DSC off and on for a few minutes (or more, hell I don't know) and then leave it on (light off) and see what happens.

    Hope it works for you.

    Update, resolution and a plug

Well I learned a few things about our cars. First thank you for the responses. This is a great forum and valuable resource.

I learned that when the DSC module goes, it lights up the ABS light along with the DSC and brake lights that were lit on my car. Second the 5 series DSC modules fail often while the 3 series do not.

I took my car to a local BMW specialty shop (more later). They found that the speed position sensor was out of adjustment. They readjusted and reprogrammed it. It cleared the DSC system. Apparently when the DSC alarms, it often will lock up the OBD2 port. When reprogrammed, everything cleared. YAY - only $100. If it happens again, I will need to replace the sensor. My shops quote was almost half of the dealers.

Here is the plug: [Oops!] MOTORS in Doylestown PA. These guys can do everything a dealer does except it is better, faster and cheaper.

    Next up: thermostat and plugs.
    Then: control arms and bushings
    Then: The dreaded oil separator.

Re: Update, resolution and a plug (Typo)

It was the STEERING position sensor not the SPEED position sensor.
