I think its time to move on
My E28 (84 528e) i think is on its last legs. or is it? here the status. you tell me... should i just move on (buy an E39) or put the money into it.
- rear wheel bearing
- driveshaft centre bearing
- front control arms and steering linkages
- rear drive axle and u joint
- probably need to troubleshoot a bad injector (engine runs rough, consumes more fuel than normal)
and even if i did all this, it still is rusting out. the rear end is rusted away and the bumper is unsafely mounted with a bracket i made to keep it on. the parking brakes are gone.
i worked it out to be about $3000-4000 in repairs if i supply the parts and get the shop to do the work. thinking... put that money towards a new used car like a 540i.
what do you think?

Re: I think its time to move on
I had a e28 that just seemed to be one thing after another..after another..and eventually, even though I didn't want to, I moved up to a e39.. I sold the e28 for $750..it needed new sunroof, tranny mount and suspension parts.
Re: I think its time to move on
Well, i did almost the same thing. I parked the E28 (Florian) and bought a 2000 540i M sport. Now Florian is on the auto trader. I just want to sell "him" rather than scrap him if at all possible. He needs work but is still a good daily driver. Lovin the 540i! wowplexus

Re: I think its time to move on
If you can afford it, keep both. As the e39's, once up in the 100,000m range things start to go bad, and to be out of a car for a week while waiting for a part to come in the mail sucks!!
I sold my e28, because it was at the point where I was fixing it every week, and couldn't afford to keep on fixing it, while trying to buy a daily driver at the same time. Man do I miss it...
Re: I think its time to move on
I decided to move from the E28 to an E39 540i M sport. I love my E28 and I still have it although its up for sale. I do have an E9 3.0CS so that is my "other car". I am happy to get well, anything, for my E28. So for no bites though. It does need work much like yours did. The engine is still excellent and I do hope someone buys it and keeps it on the road.
Lovin the 540i!!! wow

What a dilemma!
I am a past '88 528e owner and decided to check out this forum just to see how the model is holding up and what owners are saying about the amazing E28. I sold my E28 to my son when I bought a '97 540i. The 540i is a great car and I don't regret "moving on", but I still miss the E28. It is a pure, simple sports sedan.
The used 540i market is really in favor of the buyer at this point. For a couple of grand more than your estimated repairs, you can get a '97-'00 540i. They are not much more than a 528 because of the perception that they get bad gas mileage due to the V8. My gas mileage is 18 around town and up to 26 highway.
What a dilemma! Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
