    03 X5 Transmission problem

Last night I was on the highway and the X5 just lost power,...engine still running,...I pressed on the gas and the tack revved up but nothing, the vehicle slowed and I got on the shoulder. There was no warning. Once on the side of the road I lightly pressed the gas peddle and did hear some noise but no movement in the vehicle. The x5 is 7 years old and has been dealer maintained. Wondering if there are any recalls on this and if its a transmission failure or if there can be some other cause?

    Transfer case or transmission

Check the whiney thread about transfer case problems.

On some cars, the output gear spline strips. If you go online, you'll see rebuilt transfer cases for less than $1000, with core.

It is likely a New Process transfer case (at least my 2002 has one)

The autoboxes can fail, although this is more of a problem on other BMWs than on the X5. You'd likely see a transmission indicator light if that was the case.

How many miles on the car?
