Lock Mechanism Rebuild: Torsion Spring Help!

I am attempting to rebuild a non-functional driver's front door lock mechanism. I am having trouble sourcing/reproducing the torsion spring (small, flat, circular). Looking at the mechanism the way it sits in the door, the torsion spring attaches to the upper right portion of the long, vertical lever.

I was hoping my local TrueValue would have an appropriate spring, but their torsion springs are too large and seem "backwards" to what the lock needs.

Has anyone found a solution to this? Boneyards in the area have zero e28s, or any older BMWs for that matter.

I have an E28 fully disassembled and likely have the part you need, if you can identify it better. Check out these RealOEM diagrams; do you see the part here?

I just went through this myself. I needed a new torsion spring as well as the slot/tab that secures the lobe / torsion spring in place. I ended up buying a replacement lock (Part 11?). It was about 50$ but had the parts I needed. I just took out my lock cylinder (beware the spring loaded ball bearings!) and swapped it with the new part. Disassemble the lock while it is contained within a plastic bag.

You must be referring to a different torsion spring. There are several on the lock mechanism. The lock cylinder/tumbler is not my problem. See the second link in the second post. That's where my problem is.tddude

I found a guy parting out a e28 and bought his latch{works fine} for $10.
It took 1 hr to pull panel, switch latch out and readjust striker.
Works like a champ. try bimmerforums.com
