Door Speaker Change
I'm getting ready to replace the speakers in my '01 (3.0i) with the Bavarian Soundwerks Stage 1 and have a question about the door speakers. The BSW instructions indicate the entire door panel has to be removed to get to them. But, the Bentley manual shows that only the grill needs to be removed to get to them.
Can anyone tell me which one is correct?
Thanks.

Re: Door mid-range speakers
There are no easy options.
Finding a mid range speaker that fits in the existing grill and is better than the unit that comes form BMW is difficult. I don't recall and suggestions other than live with it or disconnect it. The problem is the mounting configuration and the available depth behind the speaker.
Neither of those two options were acceptable, so I came up with a solution that was not without challenge.
I removed the mesh grill and cut into the plastic housing. I opened the mounting location that the mid-range mounted to to accept a 2-1/2" full range speaker. I glued the mid-range to the plastic housing and installed it. Then I reinstalled the mesh grill and the assembly into the door panel. I replaced the tweeter with a 1" Kappa. Those two speakers power off the radio head amp.
It was a lot of work, but the final result was great.
It may or may not be worth the effort for you.

Nope, had to go to dealer
Same situation, I could not find direct replacement - had to go to dealer - If one went bad would recommend doing both, one went, than less than a year later the other went - crack by the surround - probably could be fixed though with speaker repair kit.. While your in there would recommend replacing the tweeter too.
If you do find a replacement please let us know.
