Question about the Style 5 (BBS) 17 inch Rims.

Is it true that you can purchase a wider lip for the 3 piece BBS style 5 Rims? Has anybody done so? Can it be done for front and back?

17" BBS Style 5 is two piece, not three.

Re: Question about the Style 5 (BBS) 17 inch Rims.

There's good German source for what you're probably seeking: the 2-pc BBS Style 5 8x17 RC035 front, 9x17 RC038 rear setup from the euro E31 and E38. See pix. This wheel has the slightly narrower 72.6mm hub bore that fits our cars without a hub ring. Name's Wolf Ganssauge, good guy, www.wokke.de. He's on this board occasionally.

Re: 17 BBS Style 5 actually several kinds

Actually there are several types of "style 5's", one, two and three piece wheels. The one piece wheels are cheap and usually 15 inch. The two piece are RC090 and the three piece are RS's, I have seen 17 & 18 inch sizes. Most of the RS's I have seen have a deeper dish, and steeper price.'80 Euro 635

    True, except >>

"Style 5" is BMW's nomenclature, which refers strictly to the 1- and 2-piece wheels supplied by BBS to BMW.

There are four things BMW calls "Style 5"

1 - the original single-piece cast TRX wheel that came on our cars. Generally just called TRX's (390 and 415)

2 - the standard cast single-piece wheel used on LOTS of cars of the vintage from E30's on up. Generally called "Baseketweaves" - 14"-16"

    3 - the E34 "flat cap" style 5. 16"

4 - The E39 two-piece Style 5 that are fairly sought-after on our cars since they are a light and modern wheel that still looks period correct. 17" and 18" (18" are pretty rare)

Strangely, the original two-piece TRX wheel that was standard on the M635 and is so reminiscent of the E39 wheel isn't listed as a Style 5 - maybe since it was recalled?

BBS made LOTS of wheels that were similar. That included a 3-piece, but it was never offered as a BMW-logo'd wheel and wasn't called a "Style 5" by BBS.
