    Replaced Camshaft Sensor & Brake Light Switch

    I was losing power when starting out after a 5-10 minute stop; gas fill-up, run into the local DD for a coffee (excuse me a latte) and the ABS light would flash. Coming off the accelerator for a second would allow everything to come back together and the power returned. I read the codes with my Peake R5/FCX code reader/reset tool and found 2 faults. Using Code Table 19 I received error codes:

    27 - "BLS/BTS plausibility"
    Indicates a fault in the brake light switch / cruise control disengagement switch (one switch controls both). I replaced the switch in about 30 minutes.

    12 - "Exhaust camshaft position sensor"
    Indicates a faulty exhaust camshaft position sensor. I replaced the sensor in about 10 minutes.

    Both parts were purchased online from RM European Auto Parts. They carried original BMW branded and other options for each part. I choose the Febi Bilstien manufactured exhaust camshaft position sensor for $42 rather than the BMW branded $111 part.

    By the way, this is my second sensor replacement. First one 2 years ago at 60k miles (Bavarian Auto Parts/noname $42) and now at 81k miles. Now Bavauto only carries an OEM BMW sensor for $117, same price as dealer.

    So, I reset the codes using the Peake tool and went for a ride. There was a significant difference in acceleration. The engine was very responsive as I'm sure as the exhaust camshaft position sensor was going bad the performance dropped off a little at a time.

    Back at home I checked for codes, there were none.

    Why BavAuto carries only OEM


    BavAuto bought a container load of Chinese-made sensors and nearly all of them were bad.

    I got three in a row. Talk about frustration!

    They made good on it and sent me an OEM dealer part.

    That must have cost them a lot of money, not to mention customer goodwill.

    I still do business with them, but that experience drive me to try Pelicanparts, ECS tuning and SoCalMotorspots, who are all excellent suppliers as well. BavAuto is generally more expensive, but can be cheaper on some select parts.

    Some aftermarket parts are good quality, some not. If you are doing DIY, it pays to get good quality parts, as it gets VERY FRUSTRATING when trying to repair a car and parts are bad out of the box ("It can't be the sensor, I just replaced that!")

    One problem with these cars is they are reaching the age where a lot of OEM parts are NLA or will shortly be so. I've seen this happen to other marques and it gets messy when you can't get good replacement parts. Oxygen sensors for the 2.8 for example - I haven't seen a Bosche part in a long time. The Japanese ones are OK, fortunately.

    In my mind price is secondary to quality. Since I'm saving hundreds on labor, I don't mind paying $50 for a better part.

    good writeup, one picture question...

    Where is the actual sensor in that picture? All I could see were black hoses, wires, belts, etc. I know you said it was hard to get out of there (using three hands, etc) but I was just curious. It's not something I'm doing anytime soon (knocking on wood as I type this) but I was looking for a little more insight for future reference.

    Sensor location


    On the 2.8 engine, the sensor is right up front, underneath the VANOS actuator, which has to be removed. It is a black cylindrical thing with a wire coming out of it. See the photo labeled "Step eight"

    The camshaft and crankshaft sensors have the same style plug, but they smartly made the polarity reversed, so it is physically impossible to confuse the two.

    The wire plugs, however, are under the intake and hard to find at first. You have to cut a wire tie to unplug it. Small hands help, if you have three hands, it would be best. There is a green water tight gasket that tends to fall out, and if not re-installed, can cause problems down the road, according to one TSB.

    After doing the job four times (!) I got pretty good at it...

    Bav Auto learned their lesson about cheap aftermarket parts, I think, after their bad experience, and that is why they sell the OEM part now. The OP got better service life out of the "no-name" sensor than I did. All of mine were dead in the box.

    No, it's just close to the house and I didn't know anyone ever came through Dela-where. All of a sudden, three people from the boards were right near the house and none of them stopped by.

    We take the trip about once a year


    Or at least used to. We do the snowbird thing, back and forth between New York and Georgia, and try to find a different, interesting route each time.

    Done the Blue Ridge parkway I think five times now, including in the X5 with the camper.

    Done the outer banks a couple of times, in the camper, in the E36, in the Roadster. Will do it again this fall in the X5 and camper, maybe so some kayaking.

    This time, we came through Jersey, as a friend lives in Jersey City and we stopped to visit. Drove down through the Poconos, which is an area I would like to explore more.

    Left the roadster in Georgia to bring back the E36 which is now F.S. on eBay.

    Most of our older friends (65 and up) like to drive "straight through" in 24 hours, which I think misses the point. We take a week or more, if we can.

    We try not to drive more than 100 miles a day. Cuts into my drinking time.

    If so, you'll have to stop through Dover next time and we'll have one waiting for you (but I use three olives because my wife always steals one).

    How do you like the X5? We're possibly looking into one for future kids (the wife wants a minivan...I'm not ready to commit to that). The Murano works great for two kids but whenever the third comes along, I don't think it will cut it. I know they have 3-rows now but we haven't had a chance to really get into one and play with it yet.

    The X5 is OK, but like most modern BMWs has its share of "issues". See link below to see what I mean.

    Yes, they added three rows to the E70, but it is basically the same chassis as the E53. I suspect that third row is not very useful. Plus they really ruined the butt on the car when they did it.

    I am jealous of my friends in their 180,000 mile Trailblazer XL (long wheel base) that have done little but put gas in them and change the oil. Hideous looking cars, but heck, one friend paid all of seven grand for his, used, and drove it 150K with no issues. Imagine that.

    Finger Lakes distilling makes an excellent gin called Seneca Drums.

    It really has a nice flavor to it.

    My Polish friends have me addicted to Belevedere Vodka, which is kind of pricey, but comes in a very impressive bottle.

    And of the vermouths (and the vermouth IS important, despite what some may tell you), you should try VYA, which is made in California. Not appropriate for all occasions (it can overpower some gins, like the Seneca drums, which is better off with lesser Vermouths).

    I prefer the Vesper Martini (a la James Bond) - two parts gin, two parts Vodka, one part Kira Lillet (whcih they stopped making in 1985). Failing the Lillet, vermouth will do.

    I know, mixing gin and vodka sounds disgusting, but it actually works. Something about one cancelling out the other. Real smooth.

    The only Martinis I don't like are these fruity drinks - chocoltinis, leamon drop, whatever. They are OK as fruity drinks go, but they are no Martinis, IMHO.
