2000 Z3 2.5L rattle noise from engine on start up
Ok I have a 2000 Z3 2.5L with 90k miles... When i start the motor when the motor is cold it surges and makes a very strange noise thats deffinately not normal. The noise is not a constant ping it verys. Its like ping ping (20 seconds later) ping ping ping (10 second later) ping (30 seconds later) ping ping its very sparatic. Then once the motor gets to operateing temp it runs smooth
the best way to describe the noise it makes would be like a bolt or something bouncing on top of the piston as it moves up and down.
does anyone know any suggestions or is this a common problem??
has anyone ever heard of this??

...at at 90K, it's overdue...
Pop the hood while the engine is running. If the noise is coming from the water pump (base of the fan), don't drive it until you replace the water pump. That thing will throw fan blades hard enough to dent the hood. On second thought, before doing that, try wiggling the fan and see if it has play. You probably shouldn't be bending over the fan if the water pump is about to go...
