from the way I read the article, the numbers are drawn from census reports. So I gotta' ask myself, how accurate is a census of illegal aliens? Maybe these censuses (censi???) really do show reduced numbers. But just maybe that's because the illegals aren't participating to the level they have in the past.

And maybe the numbers are being skewed to tell the desired story.

Also, the job situation of the past 18 months would almost certainly serve as a deterrent to coming here to build a better life (or whatever else they come here for).

Even if it's true, so what, though? You couldn't form a rational argument that this is a new trend, or that illegal immigrant counts won't spike again if the job market recovers and everybody in FL, CA, and Texas can afford to hire a gardener again.

I don't know a single person who "had" a gardener and who doesn't still have one. Of course, this doesn't say anything about the imigrant status of said gardeners and is a very small sample, but I'd think I'd have heard of at least one or two acquaintances ****canning the help.

Laid-off legal workers get unemployment: I don't think a bunch of them are going to go to work as field workers or gardeners.

Farm work still needs to be done, restaurants still need dishwashers - I believe these positions continue to be filled by the cheapest available labor.

Even if the jobs typically held by illegal immigrants ARE drying up, perhaps I'm underestimating the typical illegal immigrant: I just don't see there being a large-scale communication system in place that says "stay in the squalor you're living in now - there are no jobs here."

My cynicism says the current effort by Washington to quell the largely negative press surrounding things like Arizona and the issue of illegal aliens in general - and a report that immigration is down for the first time in twenty years - is too much of a coincidence to ignore. Plus the fact that the recession of the early 90s was very mild compared to the one we're in now.<br />
