    has anyone tried Google "Instant"?

Slows my browser to a crawl while entering search terms.

    Thumbs down for me.

    No, I prefer to...

...pick them when they are ripe and sautee' them in butter, vidalia onions, portobello mushrooms, and garlic. Instant is never as good as freshly prepared Google.

...actually, I have been using it for a while, but have not noticed it being especially slow on my PC.

Firefox + NoScript = No Instant Search

Or any of the annoying Google animations. Throw in Ad Blocker Plus and you don't get banner ads or dancing ads or any other such nonsense. Web pages load much faster.___________________________________________ _________________

    How do you do that?

I run Firefox and would love to block all that nonsense.

No Script takes some getting used to.

But once you have it pretty much set for your usual web sites, it works wonders. Best anti-virus/anti-malware tool out there. Makes you realize just how many scripts certain sites run and how many different companies are tracking where you surf.

Once you get it set up, let me know if you have questions.________________________________________ ____________________

    Okay WTF just happened?!?!

I googled Firefox add-ons, and clicked on the webpage. I then searched the Firefox site for No Script and when I clicked on it a whole bunch of tabs started opening with really bad p0rn!!! (yes, I looked - maybe my mistake)

Then I get some window opening with sirens blaring saying that my computer is infected! I don't click on anything, close all windows and do an Avast scan. It comes back clear so I try open Firefox again and I get the blue screen of death, and my laptop shuts down. I've tried booting back up, but the screen is just black! What's up with Firefox?!?! Was it from their site, or was it already on my laptop?

I'm on Rich's computer now and I hope that my laptop is not phocked. Hopefully just a format will fix it?!?!

    Any ideas?

Hard to say without seeing it.

Sure sounds like malware. Did you try booting into Safe Mode? Do you have a restore point in the recent past you can reset the laptop to?

When you boot up, keep hitting F8 until you get the Safe Mode choices. Choose Safe Mode with Networking. Once it's up, go online and download Super Anti-Spyware (I know, it sounds dumb, but it works.). Download, install, and run that. It usually takes care of things. If you can't even boot into Safe Mode, you may need to reformat and start from scratch.__________________________________________ __________________

    YES!! It worked!

But now, the question is: Is my computer safe? And if I'm running Avast, how did the little gremlins get in?

    Number of things...

With XP, Internet Explorer runs with the same permissions as the person logged in. So if you're logged in and you have admin privileges, so does Internet Explorer. Windows 7 changed that, so now a pop-up asks if you want to make such and such a change to the system. If you turn off system protection, though, that feature no longer works.

If you don't have a password at all, any script can run on your computer as administrator. NEVER run without a password. And lastly, IE in general is a piss-poor browser as it comes out of the box. Firefox with the two programs I mentioned will not allow errant scripts to run and install things on your computer. Most malware slips right by the usual anti-virus programs, so they're useless when it comes to such things.

You may have been the victim of Google hijacking. That type of malware redirects Google links to servers hosting more malware, so even if you think you're clicking on a valid link, you get (mis)directed to a malware site. Other Google links work fine. It's usually links to anti-malware/anti-virus sites which get redirected. __________________________________________________ __________

    Re: Number of things...

I am running Windows7 - Not sure if that makes a difference.

I went and downloaded that No Scripts add-on from Firefox, but the only AdBlock plus is one that is not reviewed by Firefox. Does that mean it's still safe?

Thanks for you help. I appreciate it! ;)

    Right here.

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865/

After you install it, it will ask you to choose a subscription (a list of ad servers to block). Just go with the default.__________________________________________ __________________
