Fritracer , Update on the timing chain clatter

noise. I finally got around to starting the car so I could pull the car onto ramps and remove the belly pan. I dropped the metal spacer/bearing/washer when I replaced the chain tensioner. I replaced it with a couple of carburator inlet gaskets until I could get to the belly pan. I posted that the clatter was worse than before.

So I retreived the spacer/bearing/washer from the belly pan and cleaned the underside of the engine after it puked oil everywhere, removed the tensioner again and reinstalled the spacer/bearing/washer, torqued it down, started it and rolled it off the ramps, washed and dried the car and covered it back up.

A week later I uncovered the car, turned the key and the engine started..............NO CLATTER whatsoever. Let it sit for a day before driving it again and started again from a cold start....NO CLATTER.

I usually got clatter from an overnight cool down and cold start but only for a second. I was amazed that after a week of sitting and on cold start there was only normal engine sounds.

So for those of you changing your main chain tensioner, make sure you retreive that spacer/bearing/washer and install that part again when you install the new tensioner. The part is much thicker than 2 carburator inlet washers and apparantly does much more than seal the oil from leaking.

I am on Fall break this week and will finally drive the 540 a little, then it will be put away again, hopefully to be quiet on the next restart.

Just thought this might be helpful in the future.
