540i 6-Spd Shifter Too High -- Boot Comes Loose

After an earlier repair (I believe it was after the clutch was replaced or it might have been soon after that when the engine and transmission mounts were replaced) I noticed that the base of leather shifter boot had been pulled out of the console. I chalked it up to it having been removed as a part of the repair process and re-seated it, but it kept coming loose.

I thought it might a broken clip or something, but I now see that the problem is that the shift lever sticks up farther into the car than it used to! So shifting pulls the base out because there's not enough slack in the leather boot anymore. So it seems that somehow during either the clutch or mount repairs the transmission ended up in a higher position relative to the console than it should be.

Any guesses as to the reason or remedy?

    Thanks much.

    Joe

There's a big rubber boot under the leather>>

boot, wich seals the shift lever. It may have been removed (although I can't image why), and not reinstalled correctly.

Remove the shift knob (pull hard straight up - DO NOT turn) and the leather boot. If you can pull the rubber boot up and push down, it's not seated. The lower flap must be on the outside of the body.

I'll check the boot, but I don't think that's the problem because it's the metal shifter itself that's too high making the leather boot too taught.

I think I know the boot you're talking about, and it has a split in it radiating from the shifter hole, also looking like something is pushing too far up under it.Joe Mazza

If the rubber boot is split, it s/b replaced. >>

If the boot is not installed properly, it WILL lift the shift lever.

    Roger that (more)...

    Roger that, Ed.

BTW, mine's the same car as yours except a '98 and with the blackout trim. LOVE the car, but with all those miles (240K) and many things beginning to act up (including now the heater/AC blowing hot air when it shouldn't), I decided to replace it. I swore I'd never own another Audi (I owned a '70 100LS -- 'nuff said), but got a good deal on a 2007 A6 4.2. We'll see...

    Thanks.
