    Using a "grand touring" tire?

    Hello All,
I came across a set of Michelin Pilot HX MXM4's used and so damned cheap I just picked them up, almost new, still got the rubber nubbies on them. These are considered "grand touring" all season tires. Just how much performance is lost by installing these on my '00 540i? The Conti's that are on it are considered "extreme performance" all seasons but to be honest the car is just driven normally 99% of the time. I've had touring type Michelins on my MB's and VW's before and never had an issue but is doing this going to "geld" the 540 terribly? Thanks, RT

Based on Tirerack reviews, I would pass

Check out the link. If you are looking to save money and you are willing to sacrifice basic performance, like maintaining grip in wet conditions, go for it. Otherwise, think about passing on these MIchelin's.

Good luck whichever way you go.

Re: Based on Tirerack reviews, I would pass

I've little confidence in Tirerack reviews. I'm running tires right now and have owned others in the past that jackholes slam on TR yet the tires have proven to work just fine and last well. Never had an issue with a Michelin either, and had many sets. Mainly wondering about the difference in performance from a "high performance" to a "touring" tire, how much difference is there in real world driving..... Guess I'll find out. RT

Owner reviews often based on comparison ...

of their new tires with their old worn tires so almost any new tire would be better. Also the reviews are based on not that many miles on the tires - usually under 1K miles. You really need to do side-by-side comparisons.

Re: Using a grand touring tire?

    It depends.

I think Jim Cash switched to using this class of tire a while ago because they actually stay quiet instead of developing noise over time like just about every performance oriented tire.

I'm pretty sure my dad's 1999 540 came with Pilot HX on them, so BMW thought they were well suited for non-sport 540s at one point. He liked them better than the Conti something-or-others which came on his 2002 540, and lasted FAR better than the Pilot Sport A/S which he replaced the Contis with when two of them developed sidewall bulges before they were worn out. (go, Conti) The Pilot HX tires could handle wide open launches on that 540 without wheelspin, so...

If you don't have the sport package and have set reasonable expectations for yourself (it sounds like you have) then I'm sure you'll be fine. Before you get too comfortable, though, I'd check the date code on the tires. If they're old (more than 6 years) you may have a safety issue there.

I have them on my 2000 588 mt since new

they are not a performance tire, but are competent stop well.Very quiet tire. lousy in snow. No complaints were eom tires and have replaced them
with same tire. I am not a performance driver, but them have responded very well in all circumstances but snow. Try them.

Re: Owner reviews often based on comparison ...

I have relied on TR survey info from consumers a lot over the years and found the information very useful. The tire in questions gets a 3.5 out of 10 score by TR consumers with 45 million miles reported on the tire.

    FYI, here is the link:

Tirerack survey result on tire in question

If you don't find this information useful, okay. I don't know how you do side by side comparisons, as you suggest, without buying the tire (at which time it is too late if you don't like the result) or know somebody who has the tire and test drive their car.

For my money, 3.5 out of 10 with 45 million miles of combined experience is enough information with which to make a decision.

grand touring tire? Worked well on my 2002 530i

The HXs came on my 2002 530i and they were fine here in the South. No cracking, wore evenly, stayed quiet, gripped well, lasted 45,000 miles for 5 tires (I rotated). If the price is attractive, I think you would not go wrong with using them.

I am using Grand Touring tires on my '00 540iA

I probably have about 20K miles on them. For around town and highway, they are awesome. Although not a "performance" tire, the grip is great, they have low noise, and they last a LONG time even in our "heavy" cars:
