    Re: Vanos

Engine would idle very rough, like it is misfiring on all cylinders. Had mine go about 2 months ago (86K 2002 M3). Dealer installed new unit. Runs perfectly now. Some will try to tell you to replace seals and be happy. Have dealer run tests on it to determine the codes and remedy.

Dealer should have seen codes thrown by bad Vanos.

    Good luck! -gh

    Re: Vanos

    2002 E46 M3 95000 miles
service engine light came on and was idling rough
dealer found Vanos fault and metal bits in oil return

Vanos had gone bad. looking at $4000 repair

Note this was one of the early 02 M3 with bad bearings and this engine was replaced @ 7000 miles. BMW extended the warranty to 100,000 miles OR 6 years whichever came first.

so I just missed out on warranty However the dealer made good on it and had "a slightly used vanos" unit lying around that he gave me for the cost of installation.

have had it back for a week and runs great. this is one time I feel like kissing my service manager
