My daughter is bringing "her" (ie "my") 2001 530i home for Thanksgiving. Her check engine light came on about 2-3 months ago and was diagnosed as needing a new air pump ($1000). I asked her to get the codes from the dealership that did the work but they played stupid and blew her off. Well, the light is back on again.

When she gets home I have an appt to take the car in to my dealer that I kinda trust but I want to get the codes first. I have a standard (cheap) 4 digit OBD-II code reader with the standard trapezoidal 16 pin plug. I believe this will fit the OBD-II socket under the dash but I've read some hocus-pocus regarding the BMW OBD-II codes. Are these the same as the SAE standard codes? The reader works fine on my Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

Thanks
