    Ongoing problem

    I have a problem with my 1985 e30 325E 2.7. It seems to stall and backfire at 2.5K RPM. The car has no power, even less when going up a hill.

    I put in new rotor, distributor cap, and spark plugs. Checked the AFM, the FPR, and even swapped the computer. It ran good, for about 10 mins, after I replaced the spark plugs then it started to sputter again. I tried different things as suggested in this forum, unfortunately the problem still remains.

    Have not checked the catalytic converter or coil, those are next on my list. This is giving me a major headache. I don't know what to do, maybe sell it for $500 and start saving up for a Honda.

    Any suggestions?

    Try unplugging the O2 sensor and seeing how the car responds.

    How did the plugs look when you replaced them?

    Check the plug wires & coil.

    and run some good fuel injector cleaner (e.g. techron concentrate)

    I tried unplugging the O2 sensor and nothing changed. The plugs were pretty carbonated. I'm starting to suspect the throttle valve switch. I did wash the engine around the time that the trouble started, I might of damaged it by accident.

    I'm planning on using techron or seafoam for the injectors.

    throttle valve switch? not sure which device you are talking about here. If it is the one under the throttle it has two switches in it. One clicks as the throttle plate closes (which activates the idle valve control) and the other clicks as the throttle plate is nearly open which stops the closed loop fuel control. It is easy to test with a meter (and it really doesn't do much as far as driveability goes. You can unplug it, but you will have to control idle speed with your foot on the gas pedal.

    Since you had a lot of carbon, you might try doing the hot-soak procedure with the sea foam, which includes an 'Italian tune-up' at the end. After that, add the techron concentrate.

    If all the plugs were in about the same condition, then the wires are probably ok. They are also easy to test with a meter. As you suggested earlier, the coil deserves a test.

    one other thing. Pull a couple of your new plugs and take a look at them. Any signs of too much fuel?

    Had the same type problem with a big six once, check the wire from the coil to the distributor. corrosion on the ends sometimes gives an intermittent problem. also check the crank sensor make sure you didn't wash some trash down on the harmonic balancer thats interferring with the signal.

    Seems like the problem went away when I swapped my ECU. I noticed that the old computer, which was taken from an E28, did not have the bottom numbers that came with my original CPU.

    Well I'm happy that the car is running again, I'm going to do some test drives, hopefully I fixed the core issue.
