Probably the cheapest one you can find (m)

Get a brand name one, they read out the P codes and most of them will also tell you what the code means in it's display. Not knocking the Peake reader, but looking up the hex codes in a book is so stone age.
I think that if you post problems telling us what the P code is you will get more responses. I could be wrong here, but most don't know what the hex codes stand for unless they have (or have downloaded) the Peake code book.
I have an Actron 9175 that I picked up on sale for $99. They sell a smaller pocket reader that I have seen for as low as $50.
AutoXray is also a good tool.
What do some of you other guys use?

Re: what is the best scan tool for

I got a cheap one off Amazon ($10.00) - reads standard ASE codes and resets them. Works great with mu Lexus and Toyota vehicles and I'm told by the experts on this board that it should read the 4 digit codes from my BMW just fine.
