Anybody here installed tether anchor retrofit?

I've bought the booster car seat for my 11 month old daughter as she's about to overgrow her current child seat. I've just realized that both of my bimmers don't have the anchors. 99+ have it from factory, but it seems there is retrofit for my cars. I can't find much info or part# so I was courious if anybody has any info. Thanks.

Re: Anybody here installed tether anchor retrofit?

If you're talking about LATCH/ISOFIX - there is no retrofit that I've ever heard of. It's standard from 2001 on, IIRC.

If you're talking about the anchor points up on the parcel shelf for the top strap of forward-facing seats you only need 13-17 - all the rest is already in the car. Earlier cars have black plastic fill bolts (#19) in the three locations, later cars come with anchors in all three locations.

Re: Anybody here installed tether anchor retrofit?

Yes, I'm talking about the anchor on the parcel shelf. So, you're saying #12 bracket is already there. I've looked from inside the trunk and I couldn't see it. I probably need to remove parcel shelf to get to it.
I also may go with solution in Tips & Tricks if I feel it's safe. Cargo is too precious to take any risks. Thanks.

Re: Anybody here installed tether anchor retrofit?

I also have a 98, 4/98 production, and all of the fittings below the shelf are there - it just didn't come with the actual anchors that bolt into them.

Do you have big, slightly curved plastic Phillips head bolts installed in all of those anchor points?

I had one anchor point since I got my E39 - I think my dad gave it to me from his 1999 540. When we had our first kid I installed it in the location I wanted. When we had our second and it was time to turn him around I traded a second black plastic filler bolt for my dad's center anchor since his 2002 540 came with all three installed.

I think it's been standard in all cars for a very long time that all of the hardware is in place to install anchor points, but not all car makers actually include the anchors themselves. I think my 1990 Integra had anchor attachment points, but anchors had to be purchased separately.

This is basically what you need to buy to thread into the system which should be existing (found on the web with google):

In this thread (the source of the photo):
CLICK you can see the three points on the parcel shelf in the second picture (if you know what you're looking at) and in the third and fourth pic you can clearly see the gold plated metal fixtures which the anchors screw into under the parcel shelf.

Re: Anybody here installed tether anchor retrofit?

There lies the problem. Parcel shelf on both of my cars doesn't have those plastic covers. It's all smooth and no markings. But, as long as I have the coutouts in sheet metal underneath, I'll make it work. I imagine I still should have the #12 bracket underneath. I really need to remove the shelf and verify it. Thank you for that link.

Re: Anybody here installed tether anchor retrofit?

That's really weird. I've never seen an E39 WITHOUT them. Do you have fold down rear seats, non-power rear shade or any other "odd" options? My 4/98 production E39 has no ski bag or passthrough and has them. My dad's 1999 and 2002 have both had ski bag/passthrough plus power rear shade and both had all three (including anchors).

Re: Anybody here installed tether anchor retrofit?

528 (4/97) has foldind rear seats option and 540 (5/98) has DSP sound and it's Euro Delivery. Those option are the only ones that I think might be the reason.I've never paid any attention to the missing anchor points since I never knew they even existed.

I've already ordered #13, 14 and 16 of realoem diagram and I think I can make it work without removing shelf. I just don't feel like removing shelves on both cars. I'm planing to use one of the cutouts in the trunk as long as is in the right spot.
