BBB warning! (OT, but still related to E39)

For years now I relied on BBB report to judge the Business before I deal with it for the first time and if I couldn't find the actual experience by somebody I know.
Recently I've checked the Business and it had A+ rating so I went ahead and ordered something (small amount of money). Long story short, I realized a lot of people had a bad experience with them and waited for refunds forever.
In my case, I finally got a refund after filing complaint with BBB and PayPal. Later on I double checked the rating of that Business with BBB and after scrolling down the page I realized they had 363 complaints in the last 36 months, although all of them resolved.
Just the other evening, Nightly News run a story where BBB was accused for selling the good rating. You just a pay a fee and voila, A+ rating.
Of course, They denied it, but it did happened at some locations.
Moral of the story: I don't trust them anymore.

BBB = Better Business Bureau. They are in >>

business to serve BUSINESSES, NOT consumers. They are biased this way.

anyone know if Consumer Reports has been

compromised similarly, or is their magazine (and its ratings) still to be trusted????? I've been away from the U.S. too long to know, but every once in a while, I get my hands on one of their mags, and I always took/take it for granted they are still impartial and fair. If BBB has been selling their soul, wonder if CR has sold theirs too??

I think they still have their independence. But >

You just have to be sure to read their evaluation criteria which they list in detail for all their product evaluations. Often you may find they place significant emphasis on an area you may not be concerned with. I don't use them for car recommendations (although I will see what they have to say about used vehicle reliability based on their member surveys) but their reports are the first thing I reach for when I'm buying major appliances or other items that I do not purchase frequently or products I do not stay up to date with; such as a new cordless phone recently. You may decide to go with their recommendations or not but at least it's good information to start with.

I don't know that BBB "has been selling their >>

soul". The organization has always been a tool of the business community, not of the consumer.

CR buys blindly all the products they test; none are donated, or are from "press fleets", or are "ringers". They still don't accept advertising. I find them a good, unbiased source, with statistically significant reader surveys.

They have, over the last many years, addressed the sporting nature of cars, and have specifically tested cars of that ilk. Remember, they lauded the E39 as the absolute best sedan they have ever tested.

A recent tire test covered high-performance tires.

So, CR is not the stodgy magazine that your parents used to read.
