    running lean

Hi there I have a 89 325ix and seem to run lean. I have fail the smog test 9 times even after i changed the 02 sensor, the cat (after market), fuel injectors, spark plugs and i have also changed the vaccum hoses. The problem seems to be when the testers drive the car at 40km/hr the car runs lean and slugish which causes the Nox to go up thus I fail. Please help.

It sounds like you might have low pressure to the fuel rail. If you have a gauge, check it. If not, change the fuel filter and see if that improves the situation.

That is a possibility, which can be diagnosed by running the fuel system tests in the Bentley manual. Other possibilities are that the AFM is bad, the ECT (engine temp sensor) is bad, injectors are partially clogged, or that there are intake leaks.Jim Levie, Huntsville, AL
