My son just bought some kind of tool

his version will only work with 3 VINs for 250.00 and the unlimted one was 750.00.

It has already paid for itself in his case. The scanner tool is software and a cable.

    I can't remember what brand.

So far I have not had enough problems to justify even the 250.00 job.

He and his Mom just bought E90s so he may talk her into splitting the bill for the high end one.

There are several reasons why I like AE:

You buy generic version for $225 and it works on every brand similar to Actron.

Than, you can add on enhanced verison for any particular ($205) make and it covers powertrain, abs and airbag plus whole variety of testing sensors, engine graphs etc.

For $430 you have very powerfull tool that covers any car from 1996-2010. You get year of free upgrades, than later on, let's say in 2 years, you need to work on 2013 BMW, you pay $50 and it updates every single code for 2013 model year.

No his only works on BMWs OBDII

And he can register ONLY 3 VINs of 3 BMWs on his current version and the more expensive one cost 750.00. So far my little scan tool does what I need it to do and if I need anything more there is a much better one here at school.

So far I have seen no need to go to the expense of purchasing one of those tools, I may go in with him on the more expensive unit but probably not.

I really should sell the 540 while I can still get something for it as I VERY RARELY drive the 540 anymore (I seem to have lost interest in it).

Good to hear, I have a feeling that you'll explore

much more than me and come up with some good info. By the way, I just bought used Panasonic CF-T4 laptop and moved AE to it. It's very small and perfect for AE.

I've been thinking about getting another laptop(m)

for this AE package too. My old AE is running on an old 400Mhz Dell, it's gotta be 6-7 years old. I also need it to be fast enough to handle my Canon HD video camera editing software.
The EI07 package looks fantastic. My old AE still works fine but doesn't have all of the capability that is in the EI07.
AE said I could return my old version for a credit, but I will start by trying to sell it here or on ebay.
ARM's price was $50 lower than AE.
    Thanks again for the info.
