Cold engine misfire

1997 528i. When the engine is started cold, it acts what feels like significant misfiring. If I turn the engine off and restart, the misfiring is gone completely. Any ideas on the problem?

You mean "every time" that you have experienced this rough cold starting, that if you simply turn the car off and then start it right back up, all is fine & dandy?? And I mean "every time", not just most of the time.

I'm interested in this one. My 1997 528 has a rough idle on cold start that almost completely vanishes if I rev the engine just a bit. I've never tried restarting the car.

I get an intermittent fault code (#1289?) that says I have a fuel system imbalance. My indie couldn't figure it out, and I'm loath to see the dealer.

Any ideas would be welcome.

2000 540i auto 89,xxx miles. Anthricite gray ext/black int.

The check engine light comes on, on restart it goes out, and car runs perfectly. This happens every time. No codes are stored.
