That's the flimsy plastic cover for the....
hard to find E39 BSPATWPT module.
That little known modules function is to Break Something Plastic At The Worst Possible Time.

Actually, the original piece crumbled to pieces as
I was removing it. Years of V8 engine heat did a job on it. That's a pretty big clue where this piece is.

Correct! In my car it helps holding the
accelerator cable, but other than that, it's just a panel. I'm in the process of cleaning the engine bay and replacing the pieces like this one.

Looking at the "trellis",...
... as I like to call it, for the wiper motor brings back memories. A "subframe" to hold the wiper motor. WOW! Unfortunately, I may be revisting that area soon. The wiper motor (#2) on the 528 is making weird noises. Damn! I know he's not jealous of the M5. He can't be. The 528 is now in the top tier position -daily driver. The trans and the wiper motor. GGRRRRRRRRR!!

Actually, car lived first 6 years of life in
Texas. It was garaged and in great shape, but Texas heat did a number on it. You need to remove yours and clean underneath, jk. I'm actually ashamed showing my dirty engine bay.
