    Automatic transmission woes again (long)...

Here's the scenario. Start car, no "P" on cluster to show trans is in park. Light on console next to gearshift is lit. Put car in drive and "S2" shows on cluster; light on console indicates "D" and gearshift is at "D". I go for a drive and the trans shifts but will not shift above 2nd gear. If placed in reverse, the cluster will show "R". If placed in park or neutral, the cluster then displays "S". If the trans is placed in 1st gear, "S1" shows on the cluster; if placed in 3rd or drive, the cluster shows "S2". I have reverse and it will go in neutral and the appropriate lights on the console illuminate but the cluster indicates something else. My Indie thinks the the "position switch" is crapping out (on the outside of trans. -part # 24301423331; realoem.com). A little while ago I started the car and the trans failsafe light is now on and I have no gear indication on the cluster at all. I did not drive it again.

My Indie is very good at diagnosing and troubleshooting but I was just wondering if anyone experienced these symptoms and what your fix was or if anyone has any ideas on what else to look at. I swear if I have to get another trans (this will #2) I am going to be the sacrificial lamb and do a 5-spd. swap, cost be damned!! Thank you for letting me vent and any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going through the same thing with my 528...I'm planning to replace the Control module EGS on Monday. Read the topic: “transmition acting up...181K” it was posted a week ago…I meant “Transmission...".

    My Indie...

...pulled two codes from the tcu. 19, ASC Interface and 42, Speed Signal N-ab. He uses a Snap-On diagnostic tool. He played around with the position switch and when I started the car, the "P" showed on the cluster but then went out. What codes were showing in your tcu?

I'd start with the switch on the side of the tran(

Sure sounds like it's bad. If you don't get "P" to light up in both displays try "N". The engine should start in P or N.

    I just ordered the switch...

...from Euro Depot. They had a used one listed (145.00) but not knowing how long that might last, I ordered a new one (314.00 -ouch). I probably won't get it til after the New Year.
