Rough idle - Time for some wrenching!

I've had this off-and-on-again problem with rough idling. My friend connected his computer and ran the diagnostics - codes 239 and 241 came up. Misfire in cylinders 2 and 4. Service engine soon light had been on, but this time after retarting it didn't go away. He cleared the light. No rough idle at the moment, but it will return. My baby does not like cold, damp weather!
Did lots of searching and determined it's probably the ignition coils. Know it's not the spark plugs nor a leaky valve cover gasket since the problem started before I had the gasket replaced, as well as replacing the plugs. I ordered 2 new coils from autohausaz.com. Got them on sale and free shipping! Woohoo only $51. Read up on how to replace them in the Bentley's, although I remember seeing them when the VC gasket was replaced. Should be an easy fix. Maybe I get to use my new tools! ;-)

If you don't find something obvious you might want to consider a smoke test for an air leak - and make sure you look in the area of the intake gaskets - especially for those 2 cyls.

+1 on the air intake. Can't go wrong shooting ether around the manifold or vacuum lines. When it revs up you've found a winner!

Viv, a long shot but would also like you to check your DISA Valve. That's the weird looking box on the side of your intake. Take it out and make sure the flap mechanism is still in one piece.

OK. I don't remember reading about that valve.

What do you know about this valve? I did a search and found it.

It changes the air path into the engine to get (m)

better performance because, like Euro, you to are missing 2 cylinders.
Some of them fall apart, the pin on the end of the shaft falls out, and in some cases, gets sucked into the engine. It's then time to open up your wallet and cancel next summers vacation plans.

It's part #7, the pin is at the end of the part that sticks into the intake manifold
Also check the bellows, it may be torn too.

Re: OK. I don't remember reading about that valve.

That's the beast. And as JimLev pointed out, if the end pin falls out, it goes directly to the cylinder! Which I believe is not a good thing...........and would correct Jim in that it would probably cost the next TWO vacations.

My symptoms were a funky idle and more importantly, my gas mileage had started to drop like a rock. When I pulled the valve assembly out of the intake, my pin was still there..thank god, but the rod running the flapper was gone. (It is plastic) I would check this no matter what, and replace if there is any hint of wear and tear...which there will be.

Look in the Bentley...I know you have access to one!

Let us know how it turns out.

Success! We replaced #2 and #4

coils. No more codes! That was an easy fix. The test will be when the damp, cold weather returns. Today was a beautiful, sunny day with temps in the high 60's!
Didn't check out the DISA valve. Will do that next time.
