    Car makes a clunk noise

It emanates from the rear, passenger side, and occurs when I hit a bump. It sounds like the spare time is moving or like the contents of the trunk have lifted up and slammed down. 2000 740iL. Any ideas?

It's most likely a defective rear ball joint or worn bushing. Best thing is to jack the rear up. Check for play at the rear. An easy way to check for suspension play is to place left hand in the 9 o'clock position and the right in the 3 o'clock. Push with one hand while the other hand pushes. Most likely you will find excessive play. If you look at the rear lower control arm you will notice what we call at our dealership a dog bone. And at the ends are ball joints. Those usually make the noise that you describe or it can be as simple as a bad sway bar end, which have a ball joint at the ends as well.
