Poll: LTW or not to LTW
My throwout bearing is going out and I'm going to have to replace it. I was considering going with a lightweight flywheel and performance clutch while the trans is out.
I really like a lighter flywheel and the engine response it gives. Especially in light of the laggy DBW throttle. However, I'm kind of concerned that it's going to chatter wickedly.
Bimmerworld has a setup with a sprung-hub clutch that's supposed to quell the chatter. Unfortunately there's no reviews of people that have used it....
Given that it's a street car, what says the lounge?

Don't you already have one?
I thought the ZHP manual had a lighter flywheel than stock. I considered going to the E28 flywheel on my E34 (somewhat lighter and to get rid of the dual-mass flywheel rattle) but decided it wasn't really worth it. But more zoom is more zoom, so let that be your guiding light.

If it costs more than the OEM type, then I say
no. Unless your commute has become more Nurburgring like. I mean, do you ever really see yourself benifitting from it all that much?
Just trying to put it all in perspective from a cost POV. I thought about doing a Dinan Stage I or II thing at one time, thought seriously about it actually. Then I thought "do I really REALLY need that?".
Came to the conclusion of "no". Beer run was still going to take the same amount of time. :-)
Better, maybe less expensive idea. Follow my lead and go with the blacked out kidneys and clear's all around. I'm loving the look. If I could ever figure out how to resize these pics appropriately, I'd post them. They're in Imageshack, and they look fine the way they are on my computer. But when I post them to the forum they're like 1" x 1". Can't figure out wth is going on. Never had this problem before.

It would be about the same price
as going stock....but if I just replaced the T/O bearing, I probably don't need to do the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, etc. unless they have some wear or damage which I not expect.
I use my car for the commute maybe 2-3 times a month, so most of the driving is weekend or if I have the kids with me.

Well there ya go! My desire for the
lightweight setup is really about feel and response. It won't give much in the way of performance.
I just don't want to sacrifice everyday functionality for something that's more an aesthetic for my needs. Sounding like a bad idea....just wish I could check out an example of it.
