    Light Rear Tap

I received a light tap on the rear bumper from a hit/run. I did catch the loon a few blocks away as a police officer saw me going after him. My bumper ('01 530 sport) has a 5 inch horz. crack now just below the strip. The part of the bumper that tucks back underneath. My question is this: he had insurance and the company has a bad reputation; a friend who has a body shop says the bumper needs to come off as the inner bumper foam piece might be compromised ... ie: not work as well in another rear collison. What do you think?

Your friend at the bodyshop will tell you that your insurance company wlll go after his if necessary to make you whole. That is what they are there for.

    From my experience...

...your friend could be correct. Damage from a "lite rear tap" may not always be visible. The only way to be sure is to check what you cannot see. I would make sure the trunk floor, rear panel, undercarriage, etc. don't have any creases or kinks. You should check the bumper struts as well. These cars are fairly sturdy but it's stuff that you can't see that may cause you problems later.
