Deisel oil does have a better additive package and better high pressure wear chararteristics. As long as the grade level and viscosity is correct, use it. I have been using Shell Rotella T Synthetic for diesels for years.Fritracer

Re: Craig in Canada, I know you will have the answer (
Spoken in general terms, there's no problem with that concept. Diesel oils are also called HDEOs (heavy duty engine oil).
Find out what kind it is and make sure that it is API rated for gasoline engines as well as diesel. You'll want to see something like API SJ, SL or SM in addition to the API CI or CJ for diesel applications. See picture at the bottom for a sample.
If it is not API SJ rated or higher, take a pass.
I've used Rotella T 15W40 and Esso XD3 15W40 dual-rated HDEO in both M52 and M62TU applications with no problems and smooth and quiet operation. I keep coming back to German Castrol Syntec 0W30 (LL-01 rated) for my winters, though. In the spring I will be switching both M52 and M62TU to Rotella T6 5W40 syn dual-rated HDEO year round.
Notice in this picture how this Rotella T is dual rated for API CJ-4 and API SM, meaning it is suitable for gas engines requiring API SM.
