considering new wheels 17x 8.5 need advice..
Hello everyone,
I am considering a wheel upgrade for my 89 635csi 5spd turbo. The car currently has 225-50-15 all the way around on borbet type h wheels with the hub centric ring. The car has developed a bad vibration between 80 and 120mph, I have a feeling it is due to a bent wheel or possibly the hub rings are becoming rusty. Ebay has a set of wheels I was considering. What would be the largest recommended tire size to fit on these? I need as much tire in the rear as possible as it is hard to keep 1st and 2nd from spinning at any boost level right now. I was thinking 235-40-17 in the front and 255-40-17 in the rear bfg g-force tires. Any thoughts or experiences are appreciated.

Re: considering new wheels 17x 8.5 need advice..
My wife got me a set of Rondell 58's in 8.5 X 17 and 10 X 17 with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's in 235 45 17 and 265 40 17 for Christmas. I could not be happier with the fit or the finish. The Chrome Stern wheels are too much BLING and the Chrome finish will last about a week maybe 2 before it pits and peels.

Get the BMW Style 32, the staggered set that was found on the 540i Sport. I have them on my 79' 633csi and they look fantastic. kinda like a cheaper version of the Alpinas<img src="http://www.roadfly.org/bmw/gallery/picture.php?" path=26956,1;-24,4;

Re: considering new wheels 17x 8.5 need advice..
I have had a staggered set of BMW style 32 wheels on my 85 635 for four years. The same as came on Sport E39 540i (2001-2002). The backs are 9.5 and fit just fine.
I am currently using staggered tire sizes too-you get a lot of rubber on the back that way and fills in the back wheel. And it looks fine although the bigger back tires are very noticeable.
They look great-style 32 has the right look for the 635 vintage because of all the spokes.

they are cheap..
stern apparently was manufactured in japan for a while and had a reputation for good quality. They are now cast and manufactured in china. With the shipping it's really 550 or so which is still cheap. I am not considering these at all anymore because i need a staggered set and I agree chrome is too much bling. Anyone know of a new staggered set of 17" that are less than 1000?

Re: a pic link that works.
This is almost exactly what my Alpine white 85 6 looks like with the style 32 17" staggered set. Looks like what the factory could have done if modern wheel/tire technology were available in 1985.
It is all a matter of taste of course, but the style 32s keep some of the original factory 'turbo' wheel look and take it up a notch.Mike H

bought nice set of e38 16"x8 mesh spacer needed?
Hey everyone,
I picked up a nice set of mesh wheels and center caps off a 740. These seem to be a good compromise between looks and performance. I have been reading however that I will need front spacers as they have an offset of 23. I plan on running 225-50-16 on the front and 265-45-16 on the rear. I know the rear will fit no problem, but I am concerned with rubbing on the struts in the front. Will a 5mm spacer be enough and also have enough of the hub lip still protruding to center the front wheels? If not I will have to get 10mm hubcentric spacers and longer studs. Thanks in advance for the advice.
