I would personally recommend using Goodridge Stainless
Steel Brake Hoses. I have a set I am planning on installing
in my 528i, but have had one set on my 300Z since 1999
with absolutely no problems. I originally got my "Z"
hoses from Stiilen (I figure if Steven Millen can recommend these
then they are good enough for me too)!

Oh yea, I forgot to mention that the difference with
Stainless Steel Brake Hoses over stock is unbelevable!

Stainless steel hoses with all around cross drilled rotors is a powerful
combination for major stopping power... one I have on both my 528i
and 300Z (Z32).

Lots of watchers, only one buyer so far

And as I was surfing their BMW's, I happened upon a nice, low miles (67K)530i SP/PP/5sp +M body work Tempting, but it'd be nice to have a feel for maintenance history. You buy from enthusiast, private party, you're likely to get a notebook full of every single thing done to the car. Dealer, most likely only documented stealer visits and the likelihood that fluids were changed rarely.

Spontaneous rupture, or was the line kinked or hit by road debris?

I haven't read about a whole lot of spontaneous or age related failure of E39 brake lines, but as she ages it's something I think about.

For what it's worth, I've done SS lines on other cars and didn't notice any difference (and believe me, I was watching). The lack of DOT approval on many lines, and questionable long term durability kind of scared me away from using them in any further cars I've owned. I've seen demonstrations where they have shorter service lives than OE rubber lines. The braid is intended to protect a line subject to harsh conditions like off road racing and be changed regularly. If used long term the braid can actually start to wear away at the inner line CAUSING failure instead of preventing it. There's also the notoriously bad crimp on connectors used by a lot of makers, but going the top quality/DaveZ route probably takes care of that concern.

Anyways, it sound like you're after DOT/TUV approved stuff so that's probably the best you can do.

Yes the steel braid is known to chaff the rubber from inside and cant be seen till its too late. BUT most DOT/TUV approved lines have lined the inside of the steel braiding to prevent the chaffing. Most good companies advertise that preventive measure.

Anyways i spoke too soon on my "rupture", It turned out to be a leak where the rubber meets the fitting on the caliper. It was after the car sat all night in the ice storm so Im assuming the rubber was really old and hard so the cold weather didn't help. It was right at the corner of my house where i come to an actually full stop for the first time after being parked all night.

Here's what happened a few years back. My brother isn't a "driver" like most of us bimmer heads so he couldn't get the car stopped at the same corner where I lost brake power.
It was the first really cold morning of the winter and i guess Honda calipers only last 100k cause both front calipers went at the same time. One blew out suddenly and the other had a really small leak and my brother doesn't even know how to add washer fluid so he didn't notice to tell me.
Outcome of a brake seal rupture and a novice driver. Thank god nobody was hurt.
