    1998 BMW Alpina B10 4.6 (bmw 540i) help please

I am trying to change the sop called lifetime fluid on an E39 1998 B10 4.6 Alpina.

My car is on ramps and I have searched the archives on the e39 board etc.. but I cant seem to locate the drain and fill holes.
Someone-I think Laszlo sent me a link with a write up but dont know where it is.

I have seen the small screw/allen key at the bottom of the transmission pan and I can see a hex key possible fill hole at the side on the rear passenger side just above the pan but where can the fill hole be?

Somewhere I seem to have read that the fill hole is at the front about 3" above the pan and its a 16 or 17 mm nut. Is that correct?

That sounds about right. I don't think you have

more than 2 holes on your pan.
Fill hole: on the side of the pan
Drain hole: on the bottom of the pan

Re: 1998 BMW Alpina B10 4.6 (bmw 540i) help please

oN my E34 530 with 4 spd auto the fill holl was accessed from the bottom of the pan inside a "well". You first have to remove a cover to the fill hole "well" then remove a plug that is actually the fill hole. That transmission had the supposed lifetime fill fluid. Check your transmission for type of fluid as early E39s in the US could use DEXRONIII fluid which I used Mobil1 synthetic. My 1999 528it was one of those. In that e39 it had a normal pan with a drain plug and a dip stick orifice to add ATF from the engine compartment,

If you have to fill from the bottom, the car has to be level and running and at the correct operating temp.

And remove the fill plug first. Not good to get the drain plug off and then be unable to remove the fill plug.

    Alpina B10 transmission is a different 5HP24...

I looked at the ZF manual but fill plug and drain plug is confusing. I am more interested in the fill plug as I have very low fluid.I will again look tomorrow morning.

    thanks all

    further help please.....

Just to confirm, the drain hole is at the lowest part on the pan ( a small hex nut).

Now the fill hole is at the side above the pan about 3" on the passenger side (US spec) and it is a 6mm hex key.

    IS THIS CORRECT?

I have tried to put some fluid in and yes its a messy job. I only got about o.5L in. I shifted through the gears but my transmission was still plyaing up. It was in trans fail safe mode.
I went to the mechanic and he put it on the ramp and put in another Litre.Still in trans safe fail mode.

I have a leak at the front from the pipe connecting to the gearbox cooler.
I will change the whole gearbox/power steering cooler, the filter and gasket and new oil next week.

Could the trans fail safe mode be triggered by the leak and low pressure? Is there anyway to reset the whole car electrics to help remove trans Fail safe mode?

I contacted Alpina in Germany about the drain/fill holes
and was told to take it to dealer and that its not for the home mechanic.

    Re: further help please.....

    Let's go from beginning.

Was your AT already in fail safe mode or you didn't put enough fluid in and then started the car and went through gears?

Do you have the access to good code reader?

Every BMW AT I've seen has fill hole higher on side and drain hole on the bottom or on the lower side of pan, so I'd say you're right about your assumption.

Do you know the correct procedure for refilling that particular AT?

Give us the full story and maybe we can help you more.
