90% of Android devices running 2.1 or newer. So
If you browse the web often, you almost certainly have seen many Android fragmentation comments; interestingly enough Google’s latest numbers indicate Android’s latest versions are running on 90% of all devices. This number was produced earlier today, and says 9/10 Android phones are running Éclair (Android 2.1) or newer. FroYo controls the largest margin with 57.6 devices running that version of Android. Android 1.5 and 1.6’s margins are slowly getting smaller and hopefully everyone will soon be in 2.X margin and all fragmentation comments will rest.

you know, I couldn't really care less about this
but how intellectually dishonest do you have to be to believe that headline means anything?
"What’s even more interesting is the fact that the latest iOS release, 4.2.1, is used by about 53% of its users."
Followed directly by:
"we should be fair and compare Android 2.2 and iOS 4 against one another, since Android 2.3 is currently available only on Google’s own Nexus S handset (although Android 2.2 has been out much longer than iOS 4). Google doesn’t fare much better here: 52 percent."
So by his own admission when you make the closest thing you can to an apples to apples comparison, they're roughly the same. You all need to STFU already.

how is this a problem?
There are very few apps that simply will not run on 2.1, and 2.3 has been released to one phone, the Nexus S, Google's own developer phone.
They always release to their developer phone first, and then it goes out to the others.
This is only a big deal to apple douchebags anyway. Anyone who is a geek about this stuff knows to buy an HTC or Moto phone because they are the best about keeping their phones updated. All of the top of the line phones are running 2.2, even my over year old OG Droid has 2.2 and will have 2.3 soon enough.
You act as though having the option to buy different types of phones is outweighed by all of the phones running the same OS version. Google could have held 2.3 back from the N2 and you wouldnt have even had an article to link. Its because Android is evolving so quickly that the manufacturers cannot keep up, but Google isnt letting them hinder the speed at which the technology moves along.
The evolution of Android from 1.6 to 2.3 in only one year is pretty amazing, especially when you see what 3.0 Honeycomb is doing.
What is so different from IOS3 to 4? What is so different about it since IOS4 came out?
Im pretty sure nothing is remarkably different. Is there anything that IOS CAN do than Android CANT?
When we get an update, schit is noticeably different. You can see how much better its getting. And it will continue to.
I really dont understand why you cant just admit we are getting cool schit to fock with and enjoy it instead of going out of your way to pick it all apart. And on top of it all you defend the OS that does less and gives less choices. I dont understand you.

It will slow forward adoption by devs.
They will not use the new features of Honeycomb even if it is doesn't break an app on 2.1 because nobody is going to be running it for another year. It is not the backwards compatibility but the forwards push._________________

No they aren't. 18 months ago The original Droid
2.1 came out last January on the N1 and didn't hit the Droid and other phones until March.
2.2 didnt come out on the Droid and Droid X until like August.
That is more like 6 months.
The only reason so many phones are on 2.1 is because Samsung debuted their Galaxy S phones soon before 2.2 came out, and were not prepared to update an entire line of phones almost immediately after entering the market.
Samsung was hugely successful, and sold a schit ton of phones. They have been simultaneously working on new lines as well as updating their current lines.
You act as if the phone manufacturers are not still in the learning stages of this as well. They have never been in this position, where they create custom software of this magnitude in addition to their hardware. They will get better about updating.
Until then you can buy a device from a manufacturer who is known to get their updates out quickly.
The consumer has the power and ability to choose what phone they want. They can research the devices to figure these things out. If they arent the type of person who will do this research they are also probably the type of person who wont even realize they arent on the most up to date software considering the apps they use still run perfectly.
You continue to talk about this from the perspective of someone who owns none of these devices, uses none of them on a daily basis, but knows more about them than those who do. You couldn't even begin to tell me how the user experience of running 2.1 differs from 2.2, yet you act as if those running 2.1 are barely able to use their phones due to system limitations.
Biggest difference between 2.1 and 2.2...2.1 can't run Flash, just like the iPhone. Most of those 2.1 phones are 1000mhz Samsung phones that run smoothly, so the speed of 2.2 isn't even as much of a factor with them.

Honeycomb is a tablet only OS, 2.1 has nothing to
Honeycomb will run all apps, but developers will create apps specifically for Honeycomb tablets.
Every device that can handle what is coming will have 2.2 soon enough, and then they'll be split between 2.2 and 2.3.
The developers I know seem much less worried about this than the iPhone fanboys who run around the internet preaching the doom of Android and their fractured OS.

Whatever the nickname is...
...persistent updates relying on manufacturers will split the developers attention. Pretty straightforward stuff and a reason that WP7 rejected shells over top and keep carrier and manufacturer customization to install restricted apps and hubs._________________

WP7 doesn't focking get it and Im not sure if they
They needed to come out with something special...like the first dual core processor or something that would make someone want to buy their schit beside simply being a windows fanboy.
They software and hardware was inferior, hence their failure at launch.
When is the last time Microsoft had a win?

what does that mean? what does it limit?
i just focking told your dense ace that its not 18 months old anywhere but in your imagination.
Tell me what it means for a user to be on 2.1 instead of 2.2?
You think its such a big deal, tell me what it means?
iPHONE comes out with one phone per year and updates their software once, maybe.
What is it that you can do on an iphone that you cant do one an android phone?
Name a couple of things, please. Im dying to know.
You dont even have a focking real phone. You are rocking the same schit as Frank Bullit. Actually use some technology instead of pretending to know wtf you are talking about.

Its idiotic to even bring up. I have the first
does everything possible that exists on a smartphone.
How can someone even begin to argue against that?
The day my phone is left out of updates and abilities that are not limited by hardware we can START to have this conversation they are forcing down everyone's throat.
But thats not going to happen any time soon. 2.3 will come to the OG Droid and it will continue to function properly.
Notice how anything IOS can't do is no big deal, something that no one would want to do in the first place...but this perceived fractured OS of Android will doom the entire platform?
He was saying it last year and even after Android grabbed the exact same market share as iPhone he continues to say it.
This "problem" will lessen as the manufacturers become wise to the game. Remember, this was Androids first year. I dont know how anyone could describe that year as anything but an astounding success. Iphone had a HUGE lead in market share. built on what, 3, 4 years without any competition...and in just one short year: GONE. Disappeared. It no longer focking exists.
Android will spread like a virus. 5 years from now Apple will have the same market share they have in computing and Android will have the same market share as Windows does in computing.
You can focking bank on that schit.
