To replace O2 sensors at 100K or not? My 540i has

101K and the 528i has 100K. They still have decent fuel economy, no codes and drive really good.
As most of you know, it's generally recommended to replace them at 100K (even the owners manuals state the same).
So my question is how many have done it preventive and if you've noticed any change in running or fuel economy?

I waited until I had a CEL for one of them (m)

Don't remember the mileage,~90K. When I got a CEL for one of the front O2's sensors I replaced both of them. I think the code referenced the heater taking too long to warm up.
A year or more later I got a rear code for one side and then replaced both rears. I used the correct Bosch sensors.

Considering the deal I just got, I'll replace them

I did the same. The CEL came on at about 100K miles. I mail ordered NGK sensors from Advance Auto. Perfect installation. Fault cleared. Occasional idle stumble cleared up. No MPG difference.

I changed mine at 110K because they threw a code

I would think the only real reason to change them before they code would be if you were going on an extended drive, vacation, or similar when you are close to the thresh hold whatever that may be. They are extremely easy to replace and take very little time to do even on your back in the garage or driveway.

I noticed no difference in power, derivability, or fuel mileage when my one o2 sensor went out. When it went out I did hook the car up to our tester here to see how it worked and it was shown to be "lazy" so I replaced both sensors. When my MAF went out the car shuddered just off launch and would not pull past 4000 rpm and the mileage around town went down to 17 MPG. The MODUS analyzer said my MAF was fine but I changed it anyway from a 2000 Landrover in the junkyard and immediately the car awoke and was its old self again.

It really depends on how mobile you are, your commute, and proximity to your garage, tools, indy, dealer. I rarely leave town anymore and then usually not past the Smokies for a weekend get away.

I usually stick to the "if it ain't broke, don't fixit" methodology. It is far too easy to become [Oops!] about cars, houses, guns, maintenance, women, fishing so I try not to go there.

Even when my alternator gave in I was 30 miles away from home and nearly dark but I decided that 540 was going to get me home or I would shoot it on the side of the highway, it made it home. The day my radiator finally let go I had the tools in the car and all parts and fluids just in case it popped before I could find the time. The thing finally gave in while pulling into my driveway.

Like I keep saying I cannot complain about the reliability of this 99 build 540 as it has been nearly bullet proof during my ownership. I plan to uncover it tonight and drive it to the club meeting. I usually ride the Harley or drive the truck or van depending on what I am riding/driving that day.

But no I wont preemptively replace something under the normal circumstances outlined previously. But to each his own.
