my only problem...

First, let me say that the ONLY emotional attachment to these two teams for me is that I think Big Ben is probably guilty of something somewhere. I wonder if, had his original 6-week sentence been fulfilled, the Steelers would have made it to the playoffs. Add all this to my firm belief that pro athletes should consider themselves as (and behave accordingly, all the time) role models for young athletes everywhere... and well, I think Ben probably doesn't deserve to be in the Super Bowl.

Having said that... the only problem I had with the actual game is that most of the Packers' scores came off turnovers. It's a shame when that happens in a game at this level.

OTOH, the fact that the phocking NYJs weren't there (except in the stands) makes up for any issues I may have had.

    Re: my only problem...

I agree with everything you say about Ben R. I tend to believe that where there is smoke, there is fire, and I don't for one minute think that he was innocent of what he was accused of, and even a hint of impropriety should exclude one from being in a position that our young people look up to. Turnovers or not, I'm glad that they got beat. Sorry for the rest of the team though, but they rallied behind Ben R so I guess they're just as guilty in my book!

Which bring to mind Michael Vick, but that's another sordid story.........

    hey...

Didn't someone of relatively impressive office call the Eagles to congratulate them on giving Vick a second chance? What does that say for our leaders and their values?

I spent four hours in jail once for not paying a speeding ticket, and I grew up to be a fairly respectable member of society.

    I didn't get a call though.

    Mostly agree

Whatever Vick rates on the scumbag scale, I place Big Ben many many notches higher. It has often concerned me that Vick seems to receive much more anger from society than Ben. I like dogs as much as the next guy, but I'd rather see 100 dogs killed than one woman sexually assaulted. Plus, Vick did his time and basically has done all the right things since getting caught. I'd like to think that if I were one of Ben's teammates, I'd request a trade to another team.

I quite strongly disagree with your comments about the Jets. It's tough to be a fan of an AFC team other than the Colts/Steelers/Patriots. Tough road to get through every season, as you obviously learned as an SD fan.

That story is a bit biased.

Obama doesn't praise Vick. He praises the Eagles owner for signing Vick. This story has an obvious political slant that even the right-wingnuts should see.

That said, I don't think Vick is at all sorry for what he did. He's just sorry that he got caught. Given a chance, he'd be right back to his animal abusing ways. I think he got off easy because of his celebrity. But there is no legal reason to keep him from earning a living in his chosen profession. He's done his time, he should be allowed to continue with his life. __________________________________________________ __________

    "no legal reason..."

The NFL actually has very strict rules regarding personal behavior on and off the field.

I'm not sure if managing and/or participating in acts of animal cruelty and death are covered in these rules: I'm betting if not explicitly, then by class of act.

Either way, he should have been banned from ever participating in any NFL function for the remainder of his life: he's a FELON.

Phock the Jets. Actually, it's not the team: it's the coach.

If the NFL has rules which ban felons...

...then by all means he should have been banned. What Pete Rose did was far less grievous and look how badly MLB treated him. I have no sympathy for Vick nor do I think he's redeemed himself even a bit. I was just saying that if there are no legal grounds for barring him, then the Eagles have the right to sign him.

As a point of Constitutionality, he deserves similar punishment to what others who have committed such crimes got. To punish him more severely because of who he is constitutes "unusual" punishment.

What burns me is his belief that he should be able to own dogs again. He shouldn't ever be allowed within 100 yards of a dog. Or any pet for that matter.___________________________________________ _________________

I agree with you on all but one point...

As a professional athlete and a member of the NFL, he agrees to abide by a higher set of standards than does Joe Citizen. And oh by the way, in exchange for that agreement, he gets to live a life most people dream of - getting paid millions and millions of dollars to entertain millions of people... by playing a game.

So, at least in my opinion, the penalty for indiscretion must be harsh. It's the only way to maintain a "best of the best" crowd.

If you don't, it's a short jump from the NFL to the NBA.

So what is the difference between betting on...

...dogs trying to kill each other, or betting on 50 guys causing each other head trauma, pulled ligaments, broken bones, and dare I say it... the prospect of death?

Bread and circuses for the masses.

More importantly... what about Christina Aguilera's rendition of the national anthem?

    Jose' can you see?

Turnovers are the result of... good baking!

When a free safety reads a pass play and intercepts, that's good defense, when a blitz hurries a QB and the rusher tips the ball, that's good defense, and when a defensive lineman strips a ball from a running back that is also good defense... but I will meet you half way because an ill timed or poorly aimed pass, or a runningback who doesn't cover the ball & gets strtipped makes the job of the defense a lot easier.

Pittsburgh should have eaten some sticky turnovers before the game so the ball would have stuck to them better. Instead, the Packers' defense stuck it to them. They were the ones who made the big plays. Give the "D" some credit for Pete's sake!
