Anyone have a upper timing cover gasket procedure?
I replacing my gaskets on the VCG and upper timing covers but I cannot get the upper timing covers removed. The damn Cam Solenoid is a bear to remove even though it looks simple enough. I know I need a 32mm deep well socket but I don't how that's going to work since the solenoid is completely circular.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Also in the photo below do I have enough parts removed to be able to remove the upper timing cover?

Good grief yet another tool hunt
So I went to every hardware store to find the 32mm thin walled deep well and couldn't find it anywhere.
After an online search I found it at Skywaytools.com. I hope to have it in the next couple days. I really want my car put back together.
Just venting...

Apparently there is no need to remove solenoid (m)
Check the link below (replace xx with mm).
http://www.bixxerboard.com/members/nbate/vanos-timing-case-cover-right.pdf
The TIS procedure indicates that only the solenoid "sealing flange" need be removed.
Other online posters have indicated that the special tool (11 6 431) for aligning the timing cover is not needed.
I have no experience with this procedure.

Re: Apparently there is no need to remove solenoid (m)
YES! That is what I needed. I think my trouble is that I have to remove the disconnect and remove the check valve. I wasn't sure if that needed to come out and and just needed confirmation.
Thank you very much for finding this.

Torque for solenoid valve????
I've finally acquired all the BMW special tools I need to completed this work only to be knocked down with Pneumonia. WTH!
Now I'm getting this car back on the road. Unless I removed both, upper/lower, radiator hoses and valve attached to the secondary air line, I do not see a way to remove the upper timing covers without removing the solenoid valve(s).
Does anyone have the torque setting on the solenoid valve so I reinstall them correctly?
Thanks again for all the assistance.

When you finish what are you going to do with the(
special tools you had to buy? If you want to sell them let me know what you have and what you want for them. I have a few of the special ones, but not the 32mm thin deepwell socket. You can either post it here or email me directly.
The torque for the vanos solenoid is 18.5 lb-ft or 25 NM.
Thanks

Re: Good grief yet another tool hunt
I made mine using my 6" grinding wheel to remove most of the material from a Harbor Freight 32mm socket. And I used about 1/2 the life of the wheel doing it. To make it special I sanded it and repainted it after so that it looked ok. Didn't work better (but it worked!) but it made me feel better using it.
