I understand protection of trademark, but...
no one would ever confuse the two, and it's only for one year anyway. They can trademark F-150 as a name (and it really has a hyphen, correct?), but since Ferrari isn't selling their F150 to the public, I really don't see what the big deal is, apart from the simple fact that Ford could sue and generate some free publicity. I could see why GM sued Ford to change the Sierra name for the Merkur version, as it was similar sounding to Ciera, but this seems frivolous as it's not remotely competing for market share. Seems like they'd be happy for the association.

I think it's just general legal nonsense.
I agree that there's no real confusion. However, I believe that if you don't defend a trademark you face forfeiture of the mark.
Since the F150 is one of the best selling vehicles on the planet, I guess they figured they should go through with the process.
I never claimed that the legal system makes sense.

yep. and yes you can trademark numbers
in a specific field of application (i.e. car name). that's why there's only one 911, 325, etc.
the reason intel wasn't allowed to trademark 486 is a combination of industry practices to denote functionality by number (i.e. 74-series logic gates, etc) and the fact that they allowed 8086, 80186, 80286 etc to be used that way. it had become a generic industry designation and they couldn't suddenly go back and say 'we own that'.
i'm sure ford isn't worried about ferrari but i bet they ARE worried that a chinese F150 pickup could show up in a year or two. if they let ferrari get away with it they won't be able to stop the chinese.

And the 911 would have been the 901 had
Peugeot not objected to another automaker using numerical naming with a "0" in the middle of three digits.

Some kit car manufacturer- they tried to sell the
name back to Ford when the GT was being released. Guess Ford said fucka you.
