    trans fail-safe prog can you drve it to mechanic?

    after a 35 mile drive home stopped at the store and when I left the transmission banged twice and then went into safe mode. Got it home 1 mile. Can I drive it to the dealer probably 10 miles with stop and go traffic? or should I flat bed it?

    Flat bed is obviously a safer choice. I'd do that.

    internal converter leak, knowledgeable comments

    anyone with knowledge on trans please comment. Dealer said internal converter leak causing slippage (reason it went to trans safe prog). They say to fix it NEW trans $5500 installed. He said they will reset the trans code and I could take it and drive it to see how long it would last.I'm going to do that and see what happens. 171,000 on the car 2003 530I. I guess if I am going to keep it maybe look around for a little bit better deal on trans than Dealer. Any comments would be helpful.

    I'm no expert on auto trannys, however (m)

    The torque converter is full of tranny fluid, so how can it have an internal leak. Where is it leaking to?
    Do you know if the tranny was full? If it was low get it filled to the proper level.
    You are correct in getting another opinion. You can probably get a rebuilt one installed for less than 1/2 the price they quoted.

    When I asked the rep if they were going to check the level of the fluid he said they can't because it's sealed. That's when I got suspicious because I read how to check the fluid in my Bentley book.Maybe I didn't explain it right, leaking seals on the converter internal cause it to lose pressure I guess and cause it to slip and throw the code? They are going to clear codes and test drive it and then I just have to sewe if it happens again. I will have to try and drive it and look into other places for a trans. Thanks again for your input, I trust your advice with may of your post.There seems to be a few people who answer post that just like to hear themselves type?

    More info for JimLev

    Drove the car home from dealer like nothing happened. All they did was clear the codes. Ran smooth shifted fine. Here is what they said on the work order: internal seal of torque converter deteriorating verified customer complaint, found multiple faults in egs for gear monitoring 3,4.Torque converter seal is leaking causing pressure build up not significant enough to operate transmission. recommend replacing transmission assembly due to damage caused by low system pressures.

    I have a trans man recommended to be good and honest, I will bring it to him for a second opinion. The service man said "we don't know, it could be ok for awhile" then complimented me on how nice my car is.I hate to think they would BS me out of $5000.

    I will let you know what the type of trans is in there when I get the second opinion. Thanks for your advice again, Maybe I can give you some added transmission knowledge through my experience.

    safe to drive it. I drove 300+ miles to get home

    and since the trans fail safe is absolutely not related to the transmission mechanical's, it is perfectly safe.

    don't even try and go to a transmission shop. Its electronic fault, check mass air flow sensor, shift control switch (on the outside of the transmission, wiring failures leading to that switch, etc)

    Get the code and use the power of search

    My bet is that your torque converter is the problem-- there's a TSB you might want to track down. If it is, the TC be replaced independently of your transmission. Rebuilt TC's run ~$300-500. Should be ~$1k for parts and labor.

    The dealer only replaces trannys, it's in their (m

    best interest to sell you a new/rebuilt tranny. See what the other shop says, you may want to take it to an indie that has the computer to connect to your car. While you are there have them check the fluid level, maybe drop the pan, replace the filter and replace the ~3 quarts that were in the pan.
    You could have a GM tranny.

    Might take me awhile to get to the trans shop, I work in Hartford Ct and travel from Springfield Ma everyday 72 miles. Real busy at work have to find time to see a tech but, I will post soon as I can.
