    Hardwire a Valentine One ?

This has probably been addressed before. If so please forgive me as I couldn't find any info in a search. I have a Valentine One Radar unit that I want to hardwire and mount on the windshield near driver's A pillar. What is closest and best point to pick up an ignition hot on the driver's side ?? 2001 540iT. I'm ok around electrical systems but totally unfamiliar with the E39. I do have the Bentley manual if needed. Just want to make sure I don't blow a bag or do something elase that the assorted computers on baoard are not happy with.

On a side note, so far so good with the new cats and am very happy. Appears to have picked up about 1.5 mpg. A little more exhaust noise but not objectionable. No CEL's or codes. Eastern Cat has a few units out on test and said they will let me know when they are available for production and pricing. So far it looks like a good choice. I have about 1500 miles on them. Did a quick trip last weekend from Balt to Pittsburgh running 85-90 whole way and got 22.3 mpg on the Winter tires. I was happy with that.

U can grab 12 volts in the overhead center panel(m

    Pull the panel down.
There is a connector up there for the garage door opener that is shown on page ELE-422. If you don't have the opener in your car the connector will be tucked into the wiring harness towards the drivers side.
    Pin 1 is a green/white wire that goes to F21, 5 amps.
Pin 3 is a brown wire that is connected to ground.
(pin 2 comes from the LCM, don't mess with this one)

I have a G-Tech connected to pins 1&3, power is controlled by the ignition switch.

Jim, you are amazing ! Is there any part of an E39 you haven't been into ?
One question, I have the opener, does the panel just pry out to come down or is there a trick ?

    Thanks again, Vaughan

    Panel just pries out

You can slip a butter knife in at one edge to gently pry it out. BTW, you can also pick up ground at one of the three mounting screws on the pancake motor for the sliding roof. A bit of a squeeze to jam the V1 adapter in there above the panel, but it fits. I ran the wire out the front through the rubber seal around the windshield mirror mount and have the V1 right in front of the mirror, just low enough to see the face of it, which is also low enough for the rear-facing radar antenna to not be blocked by the mirror.

    Sorry I don't do pics

Like Filehorse above, I just use the suction cup mounting bracket that Valentive provides. My procedure was the same as shown in the Tips & Tricks link embedded by Filehorse, except that my wire to the detector runs through the rubber seal around the mirror bracket. And, as suggested in the link, I found a short, grey (phone) wire that matches the interior better than the long black one provided.

BMW Tips & Tricks: Hardwire Valentine 1

Go to the above link; click on the Tips & Tricks tab; Look under Electronics/Cell; click on Tip No. 5.

I route mine to the front over the rear view mirror and have my V1 mounted just below the mirror using the suction cup attachment. It's worked great for years.
