    Beware aftermarket oil filters

Last oil change on the 97 540 I didn't have an OEM or equivalent oil filter on hand so I went to the local auto parts store and bought what they had (either Fram or STP not sure which). A couple weeks after the change the car started puking oil out the top of the filter canister. The cap was tight and the o-ring undamaged but on start up and occasionally on shut down a couple ounces of oil would come out around the cap. Before digging into a pressure regulator or CCV problem I decided to put in a Mahle oil filter. What I found was the filter element was identical but the o ring for the cap was about 20% thicker on the Mahle. The thicker o ring cured the oil leak. You'd think the aftermarket guys would get something as simple as that right...

+1...I'm not sure what filters Jiffy Lube uses (m)

Last fall we drove the V70 to Albuquerque and had the oil changed at JL before we headed back to MA. I just did in again and found the paper filter element literally fell apart in my hands.

I use a WIX from OREILLY whenever I don't have

a BMW filter available, exactly the same filter, o ring, and crush washer.

Jiffy lube caused my brothers engine to munch...

it self. Turns out that when his wife took the car there, they only changed the filter and topped of the crankcase. In 36,000 miles and 10 "oil changes", they never dumped the old oil. Engine locked up at 36,000 miles. I looked at it when it was at the dealer (they would not warranty the engine because the oil had not been changed); I have never seen an engine so coked up in my life; I am a ASE Certified Master Tech, so I have seen some bad engines. Jiffy Lube stated "Prove that we did not change the oil". D_ck Heads! 2 months later that particular store burned to the ground; they never did rebuild and is now a gas station. I guess they pissed somebody else off.
While I was in Iraq, my wife took her Surburban to the same store for oil changes; they charged her $238.00! They replaced everything I had replaced 3 months before (fuel filter, air filter, PVC filter, etc, and charged $40 extra for high milealage oil (synthetic). this happened everytime she took it in. When I got home, I had a field day with their [Oops!]. They had the fear of God in their eyes by the time I was done. The owner of the place called me and could not apologize enough. Fritracer

Unbelievable, they were trying to hose a lady (m)

when I was at the Albq Jiffy Lube, gave here a ~$45 dollar quote for oil and filter than came back and told her she had synthetic oil and the price was now over $100. She said forget it. They had already drained her oil out. Don't know how it ended, I left.

Shoulder is doing great; doc had me on a steriod

for the back (not doing good, bulging disk hitting the sciatic never, rt leg and butt cheek feels like being stabbed by a knife) and that cured the tendonitus I had in the shoulder, which was slowing the recovery from the surgery. Feels great to not have pain there anymore.. now if the back would get better.......Fritracer

I've always prefered Mann, but now it's made in Mexico. I'm pretty sure it's still good quality, but I switched to Mahle/Henghst which are still made in Germany or Austria.
