Assuming your 4.6 is similar to our 4.4's 540's (m
The cam sensors are on the front of the heads and the crank sensor is in lower side of the bellhousing of the tranny lined up with the flywheel to count the teeth as they pass by.
You should get the code read before you start replacing parts, it might be something else.

Is your engine an M62, or M62-TU?>>
If the latter, there is a sensor on each intake camshft. The P-code will point to the bad sensor, if that is indeed the problem.
A failing CPS will typically cause violent bucking, and stalling.

I think it is a M62 engine rather than the M62TU but how do I check this?
Indeed the 4.6 is similar to the 4.4,as it is rebored by Alpina. Do you know what code is for the camshaft and what code is for crankshaft? I have a code reader but I do not know where to get the codes deciphered from. Is there a link?
Thanks for the swift input.

A 3/98 would have a cable and an M62 engine (m
One cam sensor in bank 1, code would be:
P0340 (BMW-FC 112) Camshaft Position Sensor
Crank Sensor:
P0335 (BMW-FC 111) Crank position sensor A circuit
P1396 (BMW-FC 78) Segment timing plausibility
P0301 to P0308 Cylinder misdire detected
P1585 Misfire detected with low fuel

Thanks Jim....compression test?
I assume that the P codes are generic and the bmw codes are the ones with FC.
For compression test, to check the head gaskets, how do I disable the fuel? Fuel pump relay? where and what colour is it please? The compressions should be different to ordinary 540i. I think they should be around 230psi.
Which is bank 1 as you look into engine from front of car?
many thanks from across the pond.

You are correct on the codes, BMW=FC (m)
You don't need to remove the fuel pump relay. Pull the DME main relay in the electronics box, that will kill the fuel pump signal as well as the injectors and most important the spark.
Your DME main relay is K6300, it's under the cabin air filter, should be on the drivers side if your car is a right hand drive.
After you remove the filter box and the cover it should be the relay at the back (near firewall) on the left side, according to Bentleys, which isn't always correct.
However mine is on the right side (blue relay). My left relay is the Unloader relay, with a 5 gang fuse block between them.
Pull both relays, you'll be safe then.
From the front, bank 1 is on the left.
Compression on my 4.4 was 200PSI +/- a few. For your 4.6 it should be a little higher, not sure of the exact numbers. Your cylinders have 25cc more volume each than a 4.4 engine, so maybe 215-220PSI?? Just an educated guess.
