    smart computer peeps

thinking going citrix. Input? Halcyon's peeps are getting me some decent bandwidth, but an outsourced platform is in the works.

15-20 users, remote access important. No weird apps like CAD, just office and a few specialty programs.

    Waste of money...

...I don't know what you're trying to do, exactly, but I see a lot of people waste money on Citrix when all they really need is Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (a.k.a.Terminal Services).

If you already have a Windows Server, you already have RDS. You just need to spend about $100 per client access license and you're good to go.

or just use TIght VNC 4 free

I put that on the wife's PC so she could work on her genealogy with her laptop & not have to transfer the result. She can sit anywhere in the house & it is just like being at the PC.

I also used it to make a variation of a home theater PC for a Doctor friend, so he could shove people into a propaganda room and have his receptionist start the video clips from the front desk.

I'm not a fan of Citrix...

I had to use it a few years back and everything about it was a major PITA.

    you're looking for VPN only?

showmypc.com works well. I use it for VPN to my clients stuff. I can let you set up a remote on my account to test it out if you want.

How many terminals you serve off one box?

How many cores in that box?
I'm curious how your experience compares with the marketing BS :-)

Re: How many terminals you serve off one box?

single core re-used server, 3GB RAM, 2.8 GHz P4 processor, 32 bit OS install.

it serves up to five concurrent, usually VPN remote users, for entering time, sharing files, live meetings, etc. it's fine for what i need it for. all my local users have their own dedicated laptop, and use the terminal server for accessing local network resources when traveling.

We are using Windows Terminal Services

right now and it sucksballs. Need more speed and reduced latency. When I'm home remoting in, sometimes it is so laggy that this entire sentence is typed and won't appear till it's nearly finished. No Bueno.

Sounds like a latency issue, not a TS issue...

...I don't know what your configuration is, but something is not right somewhere.

We were running Server 2003 w/ Terminal Services and now we're running Server 2008 R2 w/ Remote Desktop Services and our employees love it. They always get excited about how fast it is and they call it the "magic icon". As in, "Hey IT dudes, can you setup a magic icon for me to use from home?"

It's real easy for them and they love being able to just double click the icon, type their password, and everything runs almost like they're in the office.
