precisely. for how cheap and simple of a R&R >>
this is, everyone should just do it at 100k miles or so. Save your guide rails which are not that expensive of a part but a pain to get to.
If you are replacing lower timing covers gaskets definitely look at the guide rails since they will be exposed.

Pulling the engine is not necessary for this, no?
Cheers!

Re: meant to type e28^
Nice find on the 03 540!! hard to find one in good condition AND the owner is willing to let go of it. That's the youngest car i would buy if i had the money.
But yah I'm trying to get started on my e30 rebuild/transplant. Got a new tool cart today and trying to organize the garage for the weeks of wrenching i have ahead of me with the e39 repairs/maintenance and the e30 project. I have to be ready for this summer. I want to make it for the late summer auto-crossing

Right
Correct. I did the job with just the front clip removed for better access to the front. I initially intended to take care of some additional stuff with the engine out of the car, but I'll get to that stuff once we have three cars again so I don't have to rush the job, which will probably include new rod bearings.

Re: Gotta have AC in summer, garage gets 2hot2 work in
You're right. When I built this one I put an 18,500 unit in the 2 opposite walls. With 4 ceiling fans, I can take the garage from 90 degrees on a hot, humid Maryland July day down to 72 in about an hour and a half and then shut one unit down and hold that. I figure I could turn it into a meat locker if you put them both on high and left it ......

Im in the middle of it now
Those are the Before pics. I bought a nice tire rack, a smaller compressor and big tool cart to add to my garage. There was even more stuff in there before that pic. I had to scrap most of the old e30.
Give me another 2 weeks and ill take the after pics. Im cutting out the rubber liners right now for my new tool cart.

Hey eagle540i6! I did this not too long ago too..
Nice write-up!! I did the job with the engine in the car too. The crank bolt cost me about two weekends and two 1/2 drive ratchets (Craftsman - so not really, but broken at the time)... I bought a 3/4 drive breaker bar and the 3/4 drive 1-1/8 socket to break the crank bolt free... My neighbor made the crank holding tool out of a 2.5 foot x 3 inch x 1/4 inch steel plate... I think I still have it around here somewhere... I had to put another 6 feet of pipe over the breaker bar... I don't have pics of the "home-made" tool avail yet...
My U-rail was the worst... I suspect I spent over $700 for parts and an additional $80 for crank bolt tools... I didn't buy the cam holding tools...
Here's mine...

I put a pin in the flywheel and marked everything on the sprockets and chains... I noticed the flats at the back of the cams were perfectly parallel to the machined surface of the head (and to each other), so that is how I timed mine after all the parts were replaced... The holding tools would have made it easier, but I doubt I'm off on any of the settings... The car runs perfect, if not better...
I doubt this had been done on my car prior to me getting the car, so I am a little shocked you had a previous 540i fail on you at just 140k miles... Maybe I was running on borrowed time and picked a good time to replace the items when I did...
I still have to do the rear main seal on mine too... Not looking forward to it, if I get to it before selling it...
Cheers!!!
