The first feature article on my company went to

Pretty psyched, things are starting to happen. This publication asked me to start contributing as a tech writer, which I started today as well.

    http://sflchronicle.com/news/publish...portalization/

Hello good people of South Florida, and welcome to the March issue of the South Florida Chronicle. As always the Chronicle is pushing the technological envelope. This month is no different as we introduce the world to the first portled out newspaper. As you have probably already seen, there ia a portal (or barcode) on every post as well as every full or half page advertisement. These portals are direct links to sflchronicle.com or the particular advertiser’s site, corresponding to the ad in which they appear in the paper.

The portals are activated with your smart phone; all you have to do is open up your barcode scanner app on your phone and then place the camera over the code…and voila! You will be instantly transported to the content of your choosing. The portals on the articles will bring you directly to more of your favorite Chronic author’s work on the website, while the portals on the advertisements will bring you directly to that ad’s website. Now, not only will the portals deliver direct web hits to our advertisers, but they will also make the South Florida Chronicle newspaper completely interactive for our readers.

We believe this change will not only make our paper more fun to read, but it will also allow us to send analog links to our readers for digital content on the web. In the upcoming months, you will see us start to use these portals in all kinds of different and new, exciting ways–from contests for concert tickets to hilarious viral video links. This is just the beginning as the Chronicle tech department has tons of surprises coming your way in the upcoming months. From everyone at the Chronicle team, we would like to thank Joshua Shapiro, Charles Bordeux and Joe Castiglione of Portal Inc. for all their hard work. Without you guys this wouldn’t have been possible. You’re welcome South Florida! To have portals added to your marketing plan don’t hesitate to call the South Florida Chronicle ...

thanks guys. if anyone has any publishing connects

would be very difficult to turn down.

Theres a reason these guys are so excited to be working with us.

We are looking for locally published magazines, focusing in Florida or the east coast but I think we can really do this anywhere in the country right now. Just trying not to spread myself too thin.

free piece of advice, and it's worth exactly that!

if I were you I'd look for things in the tech-savvy areas, like perhaps the Raleigh, NC region, DC, or even smaller university-based towns.

college towns are a top priority due to the % of

I wanna start cutting deals with the universities to have Portals on their syllabuses that give students gps walking directions to the correct buildings, and then some that lead to ebook downloads of their course materials. Stuff like that.

Plus bars and clubs eat this schit up.

College towns are ripe fruit ready to fall off the tree.

Cb3...congrats! Can you explain something to me?

I'vbe seen the similar Microsoft tags in magazines forma few years. I've even downloaded the reader on my last two smart phones.

But in nearly every case the tag from a magazine ad or article just opened a window to crappy content: some video didn't really want to see or a website I instantly regretted being taken to.

Bottom line? As soon as I got over the minor thrill of taking a picture of a symbol in a magazine and having that symbol make my smartphone do sh!t I stopped using the tags. Ive found it's quicker(!) and easier to call up the browser on my phone and type in a URL than it is to launch the app, take the picture and then wait for the crappy foment to load, anyway.

Am I missing something about these tags and portals?

like anything else, you've got to have a plan to

What we are advising businesses to do right now is create a Portal for their home page, facebook, twitter, word press blog, and one for contact information on their business cards.

They can create promotions for coupons and whatever else on the blog and keep it updated, so the Portal, when scanned will go to their most recent coupons.

We want our clients to start taking advantage of these inexpensive marketing opportunities and use them correctly.

Use the Portals to drive traffic to your facebook and twitter, offer some weekly promotional deal for facebook or twitter friends, have a monthly drawing with a decent prize for your facebook friends...get your network built up. Get more customers through your door.

Make a point to say something interesting about your business every day through facebook, have it forward to twitter and once your network is built up you can speak directly to thousands of people.

Once we have enough clients we can start cross promoting businesses with scavenger hunt promotions and things like that.

We are in development of apps and software to have a points rewards system tracking each user's scans like a CC points rewards system to keep people motivated.

You are 100% correct that the content behind the code has to make the user want to scan more, not less. We have developers working on the next level of content for the Portals to link to but for now the technology is so new to most people that we are just trying to introduce the barcodes into cities and make them wide spread enough that people can recognize what theyre supposed to do with them.

The publications we use will push the content envelope as well and help educate both advertisers and consumers of the potential for Portals.
