Shotgun if you're not familiar with pistolas amigo
If you've had some handgun experience than NOTHING below .40 for sure. 9mm will only piss someone off. ;)
Truth be told a good S&W revolver is what you should be looking at if your training with handguns is limited... which it sounds like it is from your question.
How much time have you spent with pistols?

Start with a good revolver then like the S&W .357
Reason is that there is too much going on with an automatic pistol if you are not committed to a total training regime with one. A solid revolver is accurate as Hell, easy to use, and in the dark and half groggy stste of a home owner awakened in the night... PERFECT!

Single-action, fairly light trigger pull, and auto
For the experinaced shooter who can feel all those fine controls in the dark... it's The Way. Takes years of practice to become safe with Colt's .45 Automatic Pistol. You also have to have her cocked & locked or you'll be dealing with ratcheting a round in the chamber too.
Revolver... aim and squeeze the trigger. ;)

Yep. Love it.
First handgun, love it. No jams to date, minimal recoil and good looking to boot. Multiple hand grip backs to fit various sized claws and included extra clips make it a nice buy. Feels good in the hand - cannot comment on accuracy as my target shooting is still in the coming up to speed stage, but reports seem to point to very accurate shooter. Also make a nice .40 in same form factor.
FN is also built in the U.S. and has made some nice arms (SCRAR) but is probably more familiar to the XBOX crowd than sportsmen. The Five-seveN 5.7x28mm also had some "press" last year with that military shooting down south.

Re: Thanks.
Seen it in low $500's on-line, but easily under $600. Yes, lockable hard plastic case.
