Shotgun if you're not familiar with pistolas amigo
If you've had some handgun experience than NOTHING below .40 for sure. 9mm will only piss someone off. ;)
Truth be told a good S&W revolver is what you should be looking at if your training with handguns is limited... which it sounds like it is from your question.
How much time have you spent with pistols?

Start with a good revolver then like the S&W .357
Reason is that there is too much going on with an automatic pistol if you are not committed to a total training regime with one. A solid revolver is accurate as Hell, easy to use, and in the dark and half groggy stste of a home owner awakened in the night... PERFECT!

It needs to be safely secured, but accessible.
A handgun is a good choice here, as you can keep it on your person and thus secured. There are safes or locks that will secure a gun as well.
The routine is to lock it up when you are away from it, but unlock it at night - if you need it, the chances of having time to unlock the safe or remove the cable lock are slim.

Single-action, fairly light trigger pull, and auto
For the experinaced shooter who can feel all those fine controls in the dark... it's The Way. Takes years of practice to become safe with Colt's .45 Automatic Pistol. You also have to have her cocked & locked or you'll be dealing with ratcheting a round in the chamber too.
Revolver... aim and squeeze the trigger. ;)

quick entry boxes are kickass, imo
locked 100% of the time and open w/in 1 second.
I've got 2. One has 4 openings in the lid that you slide your hand into. It's set to the length of your fingers. Slide off hand in, lift lid, grab weapon. I put a $100 bill in it and handed the box to my teenage son. Told him if he could open it, the bill was his. I kept my $100.
Got a box for my wife that has buttons on the top and a drop down door on the side. Box has a relief of a hand print where the buttons are so it's easy to find them in the dark. 5 button presses, including multiple buttons per press. Not quite as slick as the box mine is in, but still very quick and very secure. Choose that for her so we could both get access to it.
Mine fits in my nightstand drawer just fine.
