It's one "church" that is basically...
....a guy and his extended family.
(I'm assuming you're talking about Westboro Baptist Church.)
They are not representative of religion in general.
And they're not protesting at "gay military funerals", they are protesting service-members' funerals because they serve the United States and, according to the WBC, "God hates the United States".

It's worse than you think...
Like Imadriver said, they're protesting all the high-profile funerals they can, regardless of who is being laid to rest. Those focksticks protested (or tried to) at the funeral of a little girl that got killed in that senator's crazy shooting.
They are scum and they deserve to be messed with...

Are they crazy?
Are they crazy or is God talking to them directly and they are just relaying the message to everyone else?
Why would we believe others who God has talked to and not them?
I don't know if God has talked to them or not but they lack common decency to get their messages to the us mere mortals.
