Back to...
visit wife's family in Taiwan. We were supposed to go last fall, but I caught a bout of whooping cough which took almost a month to recover from. We were going to make a side-trip to China (Shanghai, Beijing), but airfares are too expensive right now; we'll probably make another trip in the fall when the weather is better (i.e. cooler). Got the iPads all loaded up with videos/games/magazines/books for the 14.5-hour flight this afternoon.

IIRC - Nagoya - Detroit was ~13 hours.
I was able to pick up a *GEN-U-INE* Hello Kitty pen for the daughter at the airport though. Also had an excellent view of Mt. Fuji (but no camera) on the way out.
I was kinda shocked that Nagoya and Tokyo didn't have a more efficient means of doing security. They've got a zillion big planes going through every day. They make you deplane and go through security, even if you're on the same plane for further destinations.
Probably best coming out of Manila. I suspect their bag scanners are actually just grocery counter conveyor belts with a cardboard box on them.
