The iPad - for what it's intended to do - is a pretty damn cool device.

The iPhone is the best all-round phone on the market (c'mon Bauer, dig deep, you'll get it).

The problem is all the baggage that comes along with those products, in the form of Apple Inc. and their mind-control attitude toward their users.

How could I possibly do that? "Best" is too subjective. And to whom am I to justify my statement?

How about this: "because CNet said iPhone is better than Droid." Or how about "Because my dentist has both and he says the iPhone is better than the Droid."

Why did you buy the Droid over the iPhone - because you weren't an ATT guy? Or did you perform an exhaustive study which resulted in your choice?

In reality, I can only base my observations on my son's Droid (original, not X) and my experience with iPods and a few friends' iPhones. That is, I haven't lived with an iPhone OR a Droid, but I've had passing encounters. Which is good, because I'm not tainted by the whole "I made this purchase decision therefore I *HAVE* to like it, by God" problem.

I like the iPhone GUI. It's intuitive. It's in sync with my finger movements. It does what I think it should do, and more importantly, what I want it do to.

The Droid feels big, heavy, and clunky to me. The GUI doesn't seem as polished.

Yeah, there are some advantages to secondary features of Driod that outshine iPhone in those categories. But to me those benefits don't add up to a purchase decision.

I hope you're not lumping me into the category of a-holes who unabashadly defend a product merely because they own it. Heck, I was a Windows Mobile fanboy until an OS came out that I deemed was better (Android). I'd gladly switch to Apple if I thought they offered a better product.

In the case at hand, it sounds like you're confusing the hardware and software aspects of a phone. Yes, iPhone 4 (8 months old) is an all-around better device than the Motorola Droid (18 months old). The Droid has the look and feel of a brick. Hopefully your eventual decision will be based on a more relevent comparison. Check out the HTC Thunderbolt next week when it hits stores for a more relevent hardware comparison.

As for as the OS, like most comparisons with Apple products, Apple works better out of the box. For most people, this means that Apple is probably the best product (ignoring price). But you've never struck me as a guy who is content for something to work the way it does out of the box. The ability to "tinker" with an Android device makes it a much better phone experience, IMO. The GUI of an Android phone, I'm certain, can be customized to meet your needs better than than the iPhone.

Then again, as previously mentioned in this thread, you bought a Cadillac, so I guess we can throw logic out the window.

Hey, what can I say. If one thing has changed for me in recent past, it is that TIME comes at a huge premium. So if it works great right out of the box, I'll probably be good with it for the foreseeable future.

And just how good, really, is standing around in a Verizon store making "comparisons" of various phones? Like 75% of the public, I read a few reviews, spend ten minutes at the store, then pick a phone. I usually keep the phone for two years, unless it is truly a POS (much like the BB I have now).

Pretty much the only thing I need to have the latest and greatest for is cars and computers. Which is why I bought a CTS, and why I build my own computers.

But for phones? WGAF? It's just not important to me to stand in line at Starbucks and guffaw with the dweeb behind me about how I can use my phone as a hard disk.

I freely admit that the CTS's major downfall (for me) is lack of low-end power. But once the thing gets up on the power curve (~ 3,000rpm+), it does just fine.

Of course, that flat torque curve is what BMW has exceled at and relied on for years - it's just too bad that for the first time in the history of the company, the E60 proved that there actually IS a point on the ugly scale beyond which no amount of power will get you out of a hole.<br />
