Cooling problem or heating problem? Jim Cash or anyone else please help.

    Hi all,

I drive an E39 523 i6. This car has dual zone climate control. My question is, for the last few weeks I have noticed that when starting the car from cold, the heater on the drivers side (right hand drive) is cold or luke warm and the heater on the passenger side blows hot. Both are set at the same temp. If there was air in the cooling system or heating system then would it affect my heaters this way or would it blow cold from both sides of the car?

    Kind regards.

    Dave.

You could have air in the drivers side or one of the flaps in the heater may not be working.
You didn't say if this drivers side remains warm after the engine is warmed up or does it get hotter?

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply. The drivers side does get warmer but it takes longer than the passenger side. I also have to play around with the temp controls to get this to happen. Is there water in driver and passenger side independently or is it one unit thats controlled by flaps and such like?

Water is controlled seperately to both sides, same for the air flaps.

Hello, I think this is also a sign of low coolant. I definitely know as the coolant gets low you loose heat to the drivers side. I thought I read somewhere that due to the design of the heater system, the passenger side actually is affected first. As the the engine heats up, the coolant expands and there may be enough to actually get to the passenger side heater core. Check the coolant level and bleed the system.

If I'm way off on this, someone will let you know!! ;-))

    Best of luck!!
